Active substance and mechanism of action

Dana flea drops contain either fipronil or diazinon.

  • Fipronil is an insecticide of the phenylpyrosol class. Destroys insects of the larval and adult stages. Effective against fleas, lice, lice and various ticks (sarcoptoid, ixodid, demodectic). Fipronil does not penetrate the animal's bloodstream, but accumulates in the skin, sebaceous glands, and hair follicles.
  • Diazinon belongs to the class of organophosphorus compounds. It has an insecticidal effect against larvae and adult insects of lice, fleas, and parasitic mites. Diazinon penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream. Therefore, insects die when they drink the blood of a treated animal.

Despite the differences between these substances, the mechanism of their insecticidal action is similar. Penetrating into the insect’s body, these substances disrupt the process of impulse transmission between nerve cells. This causes muscle tremors and disorientation. Insects die from paralysis of the nervous and muscular systems.

Important! Both substances are classified as low-hazard in relation to warm-blooded animals. But increasing the dose of a substance in any drug can have a toxic effect.

Review:

In my private home there are always from 3 to 5 cats and kittens living, so the problem of fleas and ticks is more familiar to me than anyone else. I use Dan drops. They help well. But some cats become allergic to them. Therefore, I use it with caution.

PHARMACOTHERAPEUTIC GROUP Combined antiparasitic drug.

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Fipronil and pyriproxyfen, which are part of the collar, have pronounced activity against the larval and mature stages of fleas, lice, lice and ixodid ticks that parasitize dogs and cats. Gradually released from the surface of the tape, they are transferred to the skin and hair of the animal, accumulate in the epidermis, hair follicles and sebaceous glands, and have a long-term contact insectoacaricidal, as well as repellent effect on ectoparasites. The mechanism of action of fipronil is to disrupt the passage of chlorine ions in the GABA-dependent receptors of ectoparasites, which leads to disruption of the transmission of nerve impulses, the activity of the nervous system, paralysis and death of arthropods. Pyriproxyfen, by disrupting the processes of chitin synthesis and molting of larvae, prevents the development of full-fledged pupae and causes the death of insects in the preimaginal phases of development, which leads to the cessation of replenishment of the ectoparasite population.

Ivermectin has a contact and systemic antiparasitic effect on insects, sarcoptic mites, and gastrointestinal nematodes, including Toxocara spp., Toxascaris spp., Trichuris vulpis and Ancylostoma spp., parasitizing dogs and cats. It is gradually released from the surface of the tape and accumulates in the epidermis, hair follicles and sebaceous glands, being partially absorbed, entering the systemic bloodstream in small quantities, and when licked by animals from the skin and hair, into the gastrointestinal tract. The mechanism of action of ivermectin is its effect on the current of chloride ions through the membranes of nerve and muscle cells of the parasite. The main targets are glutamate-sensitive chloride channels, as well as gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors. A change in the current of chlorine ions disrupts the conduction of nerve impulses, which leads to paralysis and death of parasites;

The Dana Ultra antiparasitic collar is well tolerated by dogs and cats and does not have locally irritating or resorptive toxic properties.

INDICATIONS FOR USE The Dana Ultra antiparasitic collar is used for dogs and cats to destroy fleas, lice, lice, ixodid ticks and prevent their attacks on animals, as well as to prevent ear scabies (otodectosis) and helminthic infestations (nematodes) of the gastrointestinal tract.

If there is a strong degree of insect infestation, before using the Dan Ultra antiparasitic collar, it is recommended to wash the animal with an insecticidal zoo shampoo, replace or treat the bedding with an insecticidal agent.

The first days after using the collar, ixodid ticks may attack and attach to the animal, but after 1-2 days the parasites spontaneously disappear.

Dan drops for fleas. Instructions and reviews

Dan drops can be used for both cats and dogs. Animals must be 12 weeks of age (not younger!). Dan flea drops for cats and dogs are used to combat insects that have already settled on the animal’s body and to prevent re-infestations. Dan drops are also used to treat otodectosis, i.e. mites of a certain type that settle in the ears of animals.

Dan drops against fleas for dogs and cats are applied dropwise to dry skin. Make sure there is no damage to the animal's skin. The application area should be inaccessible to the pet for licking. Drops are applied to a point at the base of the skull and between the animal’s shoulder blades. The volume of the pipette and the amount of drug depends on the weight of the animal.

Basic instructions for use

application of the drug

  1. The animal must be healthy before applying the drug "Dana". To exclude pathological hidden conditions, body temperature is measured, attention is paid to appetite, the condition of stool, coat and behavioral activity. If you have any suspicions, you should first contact a specialist.
  2. At the site of application, the fur is pulled back, with your hands or a comb, and the drops are applied directly to the skin of the animal.
  3. Animals should not be allowed to lick the treatment area.
  4. Observe the cat or dog for the next 24 hours after application. If you have symptoms of poisoning or an allergic reaction, you should immediately contact a veterinary clinic.

Doses for using Dana drops against fleas and other insects

For adult dogs and small puppies:

  • up to 10 kg 1.5 ml 1 pipette x 1.5 ml
  • 10 – 20 kg 3.0 ml 3 pipettes x 1 ml*
  • 20 – 40 kg 4.5 ml 3 pipettes x 1.5 ml*
  • over 40 kg 6.0 ml 4 pipettes x 1.5 ml*

For adult cats and small kittens:

  • from 1 - 3 kg 0.5 ml 1 pipette x 0.5 ml
  • more than 3 kg 1.0 ml 1 pipette x 1.0 ml

The effect of the drug lasts several weeks. Repeated treatments are necessary only in extreme cases. The number of monthly treatments should not exceed one. You can treat animals more than twice a month, but only if you wash them frequently with warm water and soap or shampoo.

The effect of the drug begins 24 hours after application to the skin of the animal. Therefore, if you take your dog for a walk, treat it with drops in advance. For the best effect, the dog or cat must first be washed with warm water and medicated flea shampoo, and then applied with Dan drops.

To destroy mites, drops must be applied directly to the insect or their clusters. As a rule, the ticks fall off on their own after 20-30 minutes.

Treatment of ear scabies (otodectosis) involves instilling drops (3 - 5 drops) of Dana into the ear canal. But first, the ears need to be cleaned. In total, you need to do 2 or 3 treatments with an interval of 5-7 days. It is important to apply drops to both ear canals, even if one of them is completely healthy. After all, mites can move from a treated ear to an untreated ear. Dan drops should be used to treat otodectosis only if the animal’s eardrum is not damaged.

If the animal is infected with sarcoptic mange, notoedrosis or demodicosis (caused by mites), then the drug is applied using a swab directly to the scabs. Treatment of the damaged skin surface is done from the periphery to the center, including healthy areas.

Review:

I bought drops for Dan’s withers for the dog. I did everything according to the instructions, applied the drops where needed. For two weeks the dog was not bothered by parasites, although we walked through the forests with him, and did not just sit at home.

Review of Dana line products

The packaging of the drug contains several sealed pipettes containing a working solution of the substance, ready for use.
When purchasing, be sure to pay attention to what type of animal and what age group the product is being purchased for. The dosage of the working substance and the content of additives completely depends on the type of animal - for cats or dogs, and on age - for puppies or kittens. This is a fundamentally important point, failure to comply with the rules can lead to poisoning. "Dana" contains fipronil, which acts gently, non-aggressively towards the pet, while effectively expelling fleas.

Fipronil does not penetrate into the deep layers of the skin and does not enter the blood. Its chemical formula allows the drug to spread evenly over the outer layers of the pet’s skin, thereby achieving a good insecticidal effect without harming the animal itself.

The large company Ali San (Russia), engaged in the production of effective veterinary drugs, presents a whole line of products designed to combat harmful insects. Dana, a flea preparation intended for treating pets of various age categories, is in particular demand among the population: it is used for puppies and kittens, dogs and cats. This popularity is explained by a combination of many advantages:

  • safety - if the manufacturer's recommendations specified in the description are followed, the drug will not harm the health of the pet (flea drops instructions are included with each package);
  • effectiveness - the activity of the active ingredient becomes noticeable after 12-24 hours;
  • wide spectrum of action - the composition is effective against fleas, ticks, lice;
  • the residual effect lasts for several weeks from the moment of treatment;
  • simple method of application;
  • affordable cost - one pipette costs around 100 rubles.

Contraindications and possible side effects

In our articles we often mention that there is no medical drug in the world that does not have side effects and contraindications. Of course, with a quality product they are reduced to a minimum, but they still occur. So, when using these insectoacaricidal drops, it is very important to take into account the following contraindications:

  • the drug should not be used on pregnant dogs;
  • sick and weak animals can react much more acutely to the drug, so hold off on flea treatment in this case;
  • This medicine should not be used simultaneously with the treatment of a dog with an illness of infectious etiology;
  • it is strictly forbidden to use animals whose age does not exceed 10 weeks from birth for treatment;
  • the skin to be treated must be dry and free of any visible damage before applying the product;
  • within 48 hours after applying the product, there is no need to bathe the animal in plain water, much less wash it with special cleansers.

Nausea is one of the possible side effects when using the drug.

Now let's turn our attention to potential side effects, which are rare, but still sometimes appear in particularly sensitive animals or those dogs whose owners incorrectly calculated the dosage of the drug.

  1. Nausea and vomiting.
  2. Excessive saliva production.
  3. Muscle cramps.
  4. Various allergies and skin irritations.

To ensure that your dog gets better without suffering one of the side effects, after the above-mentioned time has passed, give him a bath with shampoo. This way you will remove the remaining medicine from her, which no longer provides any benefit.

Owners who are particularly sensitive to the issue can also reduce the level of intoxication in the animal’s body to a digestible level by giving it a large amount of water.

Note:

These medications are strictly not recommended for use with other drugs of similar action to avoid overdose. The manufacturer does not establish such prohibitions regarding pharmacological agents with other properties.
