Composition of the drug
The tablets contain two substances in equal proportions:
- Afoxolaner – kills skin parasites;
- Milbemycin oxime is an anthelmintic component.
Unlike drops on the withers, tablets act from the inside. Saliva quickly breaks down the medicine, and the gastrointestinal mucosa promotes rapid absorption into the blood. Therefore, within an hour the components begin to affect the parasites. And a person can pet, bathe, or cut a pet without fear.
The advantages include meaty taste and soft consistency of the pills. Dogs eat them with pleasure, both with food and as a separate treat.
The drug is available in five versions depending on the dog’s weight.
- 2-4 kg;
- 4-10 kg;
- 10-25 kg;
- 25-50 kg;
- 50-60 kg.
Remember, the tablet must be given whole. Its breaking and crushing is unacceptable.
In veterinary pharmacies you can see a similar box on the counter with a two-word name: Frontline and Nexgard. This medicine contains only afoxolaner. It is prescribed for the prevention of bites by fleas and ixodid ticks. The drug has no effect on helminths.
NEXGARD SPECTRA
NexgarD Spectra is a combination antiparasitic drug.
The active components included in the drug - afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime - provide its wide spectrum of antiparasitic action against ectoparasites and nematodes that parasitize dogs: fleas (Ctenocephalides felis, Ctenocephalides can is); ixodid ticks (Dermacentor variabilis, Dermacentor reticulatus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Ixodes scapularis, Ixodes ricinus, Ixodes holocyclus, Haemaphysalis longicornis, Amblyomma americanum); gastrointestinal nematodes (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, Trichuris vulpis); heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitis).
Afoxolaner is an insectoacaricide of the isoxazoline group; its mechanism of action is to block GABA-dependent arthropod receptors, hyperexcite neurons, disrupt the transmission of nerve impulses, which leads to paralysis and death of ectoparasites. After oral administration, afoxolaner is easily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and reaches the systemic circulation, the maximum concentration in plasma is observed 2-4 hours after administration, bioavailability is 88%. Afoxolaner is slowly metabolized to form hydroxylated compounds and is excreted from the body mainly in bile and slightly in urine. The half-life of afoxolaner is 14 days.
Milbemycin oxime is a macrocyclic lactone, active against the larvae and adults of nematodes parasitizing the gastrointestinal tract of dogs, as well as the larvae of Dirofilaria immitis. The mechanism of action of milbemycin is due to an increase in the permeability of cell membranes to chlorine ions (CH), which leads to overpolarization of the membranes of nerve and muscle tissue cells, paralysis and death of the parasite. The maximum concentration of milbemycin oxime in the blood plasma of dogs is achieved within 1-2 hours, bioavailability is 81%. The compound is excreted from the body mainly unchanged; the half-life is about 1.5 days.
The insecticidal effect of the drug begins 30 minutes after its oral administration, the death of fleas and ixodid ticks on the animal occurs within 6 hours and 24 hours, respectively. A single use of the drug prevents re-infection for 1 month; The death of fleas occurs before eggs are laid, which prevents contamination of premises with eggs and insect larvae.
In terms of the degree of impact on the body, NexgarD Spectra is a low-hazard substance (hazard class 4 according to GOST 12.1.007-76), in recommended doses it does not have teratogenic, embryotoxic, mutagenic properties, and does not have a local irritant effect. The drug is toxic to bees, as well as fish and other aquatic organisms.
Indications for use
Nexgard Spectra for dogs and puppies is prescribed if their body is attacked by the following parasites:
- fleas;
- ixodid ticks;
- roundworms;
- hookworms;
- whipworms;
- dirofilaria.
The components of the drug interfere with the transmission of nerve impulses. This effect kills skin parasites and paralyzes helminths. Afoxolaner is excreted from the body in bile and urine within 14 days. Milbemycin oxime is almost not absorbed into the digestive tract and is excreted along with feces, worms, and eggs.

“Nexgard Spectra was recommended to me by a veterinarian. It is very convenient when one tablet protects my dog from fleas, ticks and worms. Now I weigh my Labrador every first day of the month and give him the right dosage.”

“My Yorkshire Terrier has a beautiful harness with rhinestones and delicate pink clips. So I didn't want to put a flea collar on Molly. A friend advised me to give my dog Nexgard Spectra tablets, which also protect against parasites.”
