How to choose mouse bait

Bread crust and sunflower oil

Sometimes the solution to a problem is so simple that one cannot believe in a positive result. Many people experiment with varieties of cheese and sausage, trying to lure pests into a trap. Meanwhile, rural residents have long identified the leader among mouse baits. They, like no one else, know what a mouse invasion is and how to fight it.

The mouse brethren are best caught on bread with a drop of sunflower oil. An important point is that the products must smell. It is recommended to use fresh white bread, or rather, its crust. Also, not any oil will do, but only unrefined sunflower oil. As an alternative, you can use refined oil after frying the meat.

Some people put food separately in the mousetrap - one bread or one butter. This can also be done, but then the effectiveness of the bait decreases.

Mouse eats lard

Salo

Few city residents know that birds and rodents love to pamper themselves with tasty, aromatic lard. The fact is that they perfectly identify high-calorie foods that will keep you full for a long time and give you strength. But not any lard is suitable for them - they will probably bypass old, salted and bad-smelling lard. As well as smoked, obtained using chemicals. The animal will not eat chemical products so as not to harm itself. Unlike people.

To catch a mouse, it is better to use as bait:

  • fresh aromatic lard;
  • lard.

If you only have salted or odorless lard, try lightly frying it in sunflower oil. To save money, you can also put skins with remaining lard in the mousetrap. The main advantage of such bait is that it does not spoil for a long time and remains attractive for a week, or even more.

Set up an experiment. Place a piece of smoked lard or bacon in the mousetrap. If a mouse “bites” on it, it means the product is natural and people can eat it without fear. It’s better to leave the skins for rodents.

Rat eats seeds

What can rat bait be made of?

There are several basic products that should be used specifically for catching these rodents. Some of them are effective and very effective.

Important: Only properly selected baits can help you quickly get rid of rodents. Otherwise, rats simply do not react to food and do not go into traps or consume poison.

There are many common products. Each of them must be prepared in a special way. If you know the approach, the rodent will react on the very first night and will not be able to pass by the trap:

  • Salo. Quite an attractive option specifically for rats. It is best to use smoked meat; the layers of meat are also an additional advantage;
  • Unrefined vegetable oil. It has a very strong smell. You can also use peanut butter. The easiest way to apply butter is on bread or a roll, but any other food will do;
  • Corn. This is the most common bait. It is actively used even in enterprises. The thing is that such food is natural for rats;
  • Smoked meats. These can be sausages, sausages and other products. There is one small difficulty. Rodents prefer only natural meat, so they will refuse cheap products. It is best to choose those that really have a very short shelf life;
  • Meat. You can cook a small piece. The main thing is that it should be very small, otherwise the rat will simply gnaw it off, preventing the trap from working.

The last point is seeds and nuts. They are very easy to load into some traps, but hanging them on a classic mousetrap is unrealistic.

Important: When choosing a specific bait from the list, be sure to start from what kind of trap will be used at the moment.

Seeds

Sunflower seeds are another favorite treat for mice. Before eating, they clean them by holding them with their two front paws.

It is not necessary to peel the seeds for bait. Any seeds will do - processed or not. You can fry them before putting them in the mousetrap. When exposed to heat, oil will be released and the seed will smell stronger.

The cake also has a strong smell. This is what is usually used in villages.

Mouse eats sausage

Nuts

Mice love nuts no less than seeds. They gnaw through the thick shell on their own. But shelled nuts will attract attention faster.

For bait you can use:

  • walnut kernel;
  • peanut;
  • peeled hazelnuts.

Naturally, nuts should be without spices. Those sold with beer, with various flavoring additives, will not be suitable.

Cat at a bowl of food

Dog or cat food

It is known that rural and urban rodents are very different in their preferences. They choose the food that they were used to eating in childhood and which has the highest calorie content. Often this product is cat or dog food. Lard and sausage in the apartment are securely hidden in the refrigerator, but the pet’s bowl is in the public domain. Plus, pet food smells strong. Walking past it is a real challenge for a mouse.

Recipe from the Vredstop website: 1 oatmeal cookies, 3 corn sticks, 1 teaspoon of halva, 10 peeled seeds. Crush the mixture in a mortar and use it as bait for rats and mice.

Mouse at the mousetrap

What bait should you put in a mousetrap?

Note that mice and especially rats have a very acute sense of smell. It is this that allows them to find food in any corner of both the house and the garden. And despite the fact that these pests are practically omnivores, they have “preferences” in food. They are attracted to the persistent strong aroma of organic products.

They can eat stale food, but they always give preference to “first-class” delicacies. Natural baits that can be safely placed in a trap or trap - they will definitely attract a mouse or rat:

  • Lard - this is the product that rodents really like because it has a persistent pleasant aroma. It is recommended to use only fresh lard, slightly smoked or salted lard.
  • Oil (vegetable) – the product has a strong odor, especially for unrefined (dark) oils. You can moisten bread, a piece of meat or cotton wool with them. But sesame oil has a spicy aroma; a mouse or rat can smell it from a great distance, so it can be safely used as a base for bait.
  • Cereals and fresh baked goods - rodents like this mousetrap bait, attracting them with its taste; you can additionally add a few drops of any vegetable oil. Sometimes owners prepare small “cakes” from seeds and flour. In nature, rodents often feed on cereals. And if you treat a roll or bread or grain with poison for rats or mice, you will increase the effectiveness of the bait. If the trap mechanism does not work, the poison will kill them.
  • Sausages - the bait, of course, has a distinct smell, but sometimes rodents refuse treats stuffed with various chemical additives. Use sausage only as a last resort or buy expensive natural products.
  • Fresh meat is an excellent “food” for rats and mice. It emits a specific smell that spreads over a large area. Please note that the piece in the trap should not be very large so that the pest cannot bite off the edges and simply leave the trap.
  • Peanut butter is a great rodent lure. It has a very strong aroma that does not lose its intensity for many days. You can spread butter or paste from these nuts on a piece of bread.

And, of course, many people believe that rats and mice really love cheese . This is a misconception, because animals prefer food that is available in their natural habitat. But they are unlikely to find ready-made fermented milk products there.

The cheese has a pleasant aroma, but its effectiveness as bait is highly questionable. So which “delicacy” should you stop at? We already have the answer.

The trap has a reliable locking mechanism and is equipped with completely organic bait. What is the advantage of this bait:

  • No dangerous chemicals that can be eaten by pets or touched by children.
  • A well-thought-out design from which the rodent can no longer escape - the trap resembles two doors with teeth along the edges, which, upon contact with a rat, slam shut tightly, breaking the rodent's spine.
  • Reusable bait - the trap is already set with attractive “food” for the rat, which does not lose its aroma. One bait is enough to keep the trap running for a year ! After this time, you just need to insert another bait, and the trap is ready for use again.

Features of catching rodents

The first thing to consider when trapping rodents is that the approach to mice and rats is different. Seeing nibbled bread, a pack of cereal, or finding excrement, it is impossible to understand what kind of enemy you are dealing with. It can be either a mouse or a rat. The first one is easier to catch.

  • Mice are quite indiscriminate eaters; they love all the foods listed above, as well as fruits, pastries and sweets.
  • Rats are more cunning and selective. It is best to catch them with sausage, lard, or fresh minced meat with onions. It is recommended to place the rat trap at the bottom of the bucket. These rodents have become accustomed to pulling out the bait by sharply jerking it to the side. In a bucket where space is limited, this number will not work.

Among other things, when choosing bait you should take into account the design of the trap:

  • If it has a hook, then you need to use a dense product (lard, sausage). The animal must certainly pull the bait. In this case, she will dine on seeds and nuts right in the mousetrap and run away safely.
  • If the trap is triggered by the weight of the rodent and it only needs to get into it, you can use all of the above baits.

Mouse in glue trap

Catching mice with glue

In addition to mousetraps, there are so-called sticky traps. They come in the form of a “book” coated with a very sticky substance.

You can also purchase glue for catching mice and rats separately. It can be applied independently to A4 sheets or cardboard. It’s very easy to catch rodents with glue: once a mouse steps on the cardboard with one paw, it will never come off it. To do this, the trap is placed in the path of pest movement - along the walls, under the refrigerator.

It is not necessary to use bait in a sticky trap. But if you want, it is better to put in the center of the sheet something that does not spoil for a long time - lard, a crust of bread with butter. If you put an apple or sausage there, you will soon regret it: they will spoil on the second day, and it is not so easy to take them out without getting dirty with glue.

Homemade traps

To catch an animal, you need to buy or try to assemble one of the traps yourself. The simplest device can be easily made from a tank or bucket. Its walls should be smooth and high enough. It is better to use a plastic container. At the bottom you need to put odorous bait for mice. All that remains is to place the trap in the right place and wait (Fig. 3). Mice or rats will smell a pleasant aroma, walk across the bridge to the bait and fall to the bottom.

Homemade rat trap (video)

The next trap is also quite simple to make. You need to apply glue to a solid base (Fig. 4). It is not recommended to apply it to cardboard. A large rat can drag him away. The glue is applied in an even layer to the base. A tasty bait is placed in the center. Rodents run to the smell and stick to the glue. This way you can catch several animals at once.

You can make a device from a plastic bottle with a capacity of 20 liters. 20 g of unrefined oil is poured into it and distributed over the walls. You need to throw a piece of lard or sausage at the bottom. A homemade device is placed under the very edge of the tabletop. You need to cut out a bridge from cardboard that will connect the neck of the bottle to the table. The trap is reinforced with books or simply tied to a table. When the rodent descends into the trap along the bridge, the slippery high walls will not give him the opportunity to get out.

You can fill a regular bucket 1/3 with water and place it next to the table. Place a piece of flexible plastic or plywood on the table the size of a student ruler. A bait is placed at the end of it and pushed over the edge of the tabletop. The rat follows the smell and, under the weight of its own body, falls into a bucket of water.

For fishing, a mixture of flour and gypsum in a 1:1 ratio is used. Place a container of water nearby. The smell of flour attracts the animal. After drinking ordinary water after eating, rodents die.

When using such traps, you must follow several rules:

  • do not leave any power sources (except in a trap);
  • remove food waste from the kitchen regularly;
  • store various cereals in metal or glass jars;
  • traps should be placed near walls;
  • keep pets and small children away from them;
  • rat traps should always be clean;
  • It is better to handle the trap with gloves, as rodents can sense the smells of possible danger well.

The presence of a rodent in an apartment or house can seriously poison the life of the owner. These pests spread infection, spoil food and various things. In addition, many people are afraid of rats and mice, and they can even harm children and pets. There are many ways to combat this scourge, but only some of them are truly effective.

What about cheese?

The idea that rats and mice love cheese most of all has spread thanks to cartoons. You can see a rodent chasing a cheese treat in Tom and Jerry, Chip and Dale, and Ratatouille. Perhaps a mouse with cheese looks more aesthetically pleasing than one with lard.

Be that as it may, real rodents don't like cheese. It is a myth. Of course, if the mouse is hungry, it may bite into a piece of cheese. But other baits work much more effectively.

If you decide to catch a mouse with cheese, use a smoked product. It attracts rodents much better.

Cheese cheese with spices

How to prepare a treat with poison?

Mice can almost always be caught with tactile mousetraps, but rats cannot. These pests sometimes reach enormous sizes; not every trap can cope with a carcass. Many rats calmly “feast” on the bait and leave the trap almost unharmed, freeing themselves from the trap. For such cases, we recommend using poison - Zookoumarin, Krysid, Ratindan. These drugs are easily combined with a food base. Suitable:

  • fresh minced meat;
  • chopped boiled chicken eggs;
  • dough enriched with spices (cinnamon, cloves);
  • oatmeal with vegetable oil.

Combine one of the above options with poisonous powder in the proportion indicated on the package. Mix thoroughly. Place the mixture on a saucer or cardboard where rodents most often visit - behind household appliances, furniture, kitchen units, in the basement. Do not forget that preparation work must be carried out while wearing protection (gloves and a mask). This method of exterminating rodents has two significant disadvantages:

  • it is necessary to hide the poison well from children and pets so that they do not accidentally eat it;
  • the pest can die from poison in an inaccessible place (behind drywall), the carcass will decompose and smell bad.

All methods of killing rats and mice using bait described in our article have proven themselves over the years. But you should remember that rodents are smart and resourceful, and they may ignore some treats. They will have to look for a product that suits their taste. In any case, poisoning or being caught in a trap is a matter of time, because sooner or later the parasite will get hungry.

The rat is a harmful and cunning neighbor of a person. These animals are very voracious. How to catch a rat at home? After all, it penetrates into the most sometimes inaccessible places through small cracks and causes enormous damage to things and products. With its rustling noise inside the wall or under the floor, the rodent significantly complicates the life of the homeowners. How can you catch a rat?

What will a rodent definitely not eat?

It is believed that mice and rats eat absolutely everything that catches their eye. They chew books, polystyrene foam, potatoes and other seemingly unattractive foods. But being smart animals, they sense that there is danger from mousetraps. They will never reach into a suspicious device for an unattractive, albeit edible, bait.

It is useless to put in a mousetrap:

  • weathered cheese;
  • spoiled sausages and frankfurters;
  • dried baked goods;
  • chocolate;
  • old lard;
  • crackers;
  • spiced products.

Catching rodents using mousetraps is the best alternative to poisons. A poisoned mouse can die anywhere, and finding it is not always easy. There will be a disgusting smell in the house, and corpses may end up in shoes and food. It is much better to use a baited trap. With its help you can catch about 20 mice in just a day. The main thing is to use the right product. Use our list of baits. Change them periodically, and also move the mousetraps themselves. Although rodents are smart, the most cunning and dangerous animal on earth is man.

Rats or mice

First of all, it is very important to determine whether rats or mice have settled in the house. There may be different ways to combat these rodents. The most important thing is that such animals have different taste preferences.

Tip: The easiest way is to set different traps at the very beginning. Test several baits or install both at the same time, for every taste.

There are several basic products specifically for rats. In particular, these are foods of animal origin:

  • Lard, sausages, various smoked meats;
  • Raw minced meat;
  • Fish products;
  • Cheeses and cottage cheese;
  • Eggs in different types.

Regarding mice, the list is slightly different. These include a variety of fruits, as well as bread and porridge. Many people, relying on films and cartoons, decide to add cheese. In fact, this is not the most attractive bait for any rodents.

Bait for rats in a rat trap will definitely work well if it is chosen correctly from animal products, and is also well secured and the trap is placed in a good place. Individual characteristics must also be taken into account. It is best for the food to be from a familiar habitat and with a strong smell.
