Notes of an Astrakhan naturalist. Black carpenter ants

Who are ants?

Ants are a family of insects and a superfamily of Ants.
It should be noted that these are the most numerous representatives of the entire family. Why are these creatures so interesting? Despite their small size, they have a rather complex organization of their society. There is even a whole science that studies ants and their behavior, called myrmecology. It is difficult to describe all the diversity of these insects, and therefore we will only talk about forest ants, which we often encounter. In the middle part of Eurasia, as a rule, three varieties can be found. I would like to talk about them in more detail.

Signs of ants in the house

Carpenter ants leave behind traces of their vital activity - wooden dust, which looks like flour. It is a building material for insect nests. It is easiest to notice early in the morning or evening. It is then that they begin the period of collecting building materials. Dead insects are often found among the dust and sawdust.

Ants move through the developed territory one after another, so they are easy to spot on the floor or near the walls of the house.

By following these hard workers, you can quickly determine their favorite place. Proof that carpenter ants have settled near the house are rather large white eggs hidden in the nesting box. If the rot is located next to a wooden building, carefully inspect the walls of the house and pierce the walls with a thin screwdriver. This will help detect passages inside the tree.

Sometimes woodworms build an entire colony in the vicinity of a house. In this case, they lay paths between individual nests. Sometimes they can pass through the territory of the house. They easily penetrate there through microscopic cracks.

What are the signs of pest infestation indoors?

If you notice light dust near the walls of your house, which closely resembles fine sawdust, you need to start inspecting the area to find areas affected by pests. Wood that has been attacked by woodworms will have cracks and holes. Such pests can settle not only in walls, but also in cabinets, hollow doors, and lintels. A damp tree is at greatest risk of attack from ants.

If you cannot accurately determine the location of the ant family, you can place bait along the paths of the insects - they love sweets, so honey/sugar/syrup is perfect. Next, you will need to monitor the movement of the pests, which will carry the food they have caught to their relatives.

Ants

Getting rid of woodworms is possible in the same ways as with other arthropods. Having discovered a nest in easily accessible places, it is quite simply destroyed along with the pests.

Where to look for ants

  • Woodworms settle in damp wood because it becomes soft when exposed to water. It is much easier to make holes in such material. Therefore, they are investigating the places where the sewer exits.
  • Check existing door mats.
  • They inspect the foundation and courtyards.
  • They look for woodworms in the grass, lawns, and under bushes.
  • Explore the area around young trees. It is usually covered with a thick layer of damp mulch or leaves in which ants like to live. To find them, rake the mulch and inspect the ground.
  • Woodworms can live in compost heaps. Sometimes they settle in floors and in potted plants.

Major pests

Wooden houses are often inhabited by three types of wood ants: red-breasted, black and odorous. Other carpenter ants can also live in walls, but these ones, due to their omnivorous nature, appear directly in living quarters and are easy to notice.

The largest carpenter ant

Red-breasted carpenter ants

The red-breasted carpenter ant is the largest of all insects of the family living in Russia. Red-breasted carpenter ants can reach 2 cm in size.

Interesting!

The species is protected in some regions, one of which is the Tambov region.

An ant can live not only in dead trees, but also gnaw through living wood. Well-dried logs, used for the construction of walls in a wooden house, are not a barrier for this insect. This ant does not feed on wood. It gnaws holes in trunks and log walls, making its nest there. Red-breasted woodborers live in colonies, the number of which can reach 10 million individuals. By gnawing holes in a tree, these insects are capable of making one shell with a rotten core from a high-quality solid log within a year.

Having settled in the house, red-breasted woodborers look for food indoors. Like other ants, red-breasted carpenter ants pick up leftover food in the kitchen and are very greedy for sweets.

Females and males of this species have wings and can migrate a considerable distance in search of a place for a new nest. Working individuals of all castes are wingless.

Black wood borer

Black wood borer

Outwardly similar to the black garden ant, but differs in its large size and very large head. Females and soldiers of this species reach 1.5 cm in length. The head of the black woodworm is wider than the abdomen.

On a note!

The black gardener's head is much smaller than its abdomen.

The black carpenter ant lives in rotten wood of forest trees. It rarely attacks houses, since there is no suitable habitat for it. But if the house begins to rot, you can expect ants to appear. When planning to fight this species, you need to take into account that in the Vladimir and Vologda regions these insects are included in the Red Book.

Smelly guest

Odorous carpenter ants

The validity of the name of this species is disputed. They say that the odorous carpenter ant got its name from its pungent “non-ant” smell. But inquisitive researchers, poking around in the anthills of these insects, did not notice any smell.

Odorous carpenter ants are a small species of ant and can easily be confused with common black ants. The odorous one also has a black body color, but a larger head and abdomen with light stripes. But the latter is visible only with magnification.

Interesting!

Young females start families by parasitizing other ant species.

The size of females of this species is 8 mm, males 4 mm and workers 4-5 mm. There can be several females in one colony.

Scented woodworms feed on the honeydew of aphids, which they breed in their anthills. Nests are made in hollow trees, chewing rotted wood to the state of very fine sawdust and gluing the resulting mass with saliva. When finished, the building material looks like “cardboard”, similar to that made by distant relatives of ants – wasps.

Shiny carpenter ant

Shiny carpenter ant

Insects of medium size: females 1 cm, males 0.7 cm, workers 0.5-0.9 cm. Body black, shiny. The head is large.

Lives in dead wood and living trees. In nature, it hunts small invertebrates and collects aphid honeydew. The diet of this carpenter ant is protein-carbohydrate, so having chosen a wooden residential building as a nest, the insects will begin to pick up leftover food from a person’s table.

Interesting!

In the absence of the queen, large soldiers themselves begin to lay eggs.

Description and appearance

If you do not take into account the eggs and pupae, the odorous wood borer, also known as the willow wood borer, appears in two forms during its life.

Firstly, this is an adult - a rather large butterfly, reaching a wingspan of up to ten centimeters in females and up to seven centimeters in males. The wings have a brownish-gray pattern imitating tree bark in the form of light spots and dark curved lines. The insect's abdomen is covered with small hairs. The female has an ovipositor on it, which does not allow her to move for a long time with the help of her wings. Most of the time she does not fly, but crawls.

The butterfly has well-developed olfactory organs located on the antennae, as well as a hearing organ located on the abdomen. With its help, the woodworm detects ultrasounds emitted by its enemies - bats.

Secondly, this is a wood-boring caterpillar, which, unlike the modestly colored butterfly, is distinguished by its bright color - pink in young individuals, cherry red or brownish-red, with a brown back and black head - in more mature ones. By the end of development it reaches 12 cm in length.

The caterpillars have powerful jaws, at the base of which there are glands that secrete a special secretion with a strong odor of wood vinegar. This pungent odor instantly reveals the presence of a pest.

Appearance

Appearance

Black carpenter ants

In addition to black house ants, there are also black carpenter ants. As their name suggests, they love to chew wood. If they settle next to wooden buildings, they can cause great damage to them.

Features of the view

These insects love to settle in dry trees and old stumps. The color of ants is most often black, sometimes the chest has a red tint. Males reach one centimeter in length, while females are slightly larger - about one and a half centimeters. Females have wings, which they discard after mating. The main part of the colony are worker ants, which tirelessly expand the nest, gnawing new passages in the tree.

Once a year in the summer, ants begin to mate. Males grow wings, after which they mate with females in the air. The males then die, and the females look for a suitable place to lay eggs. At first, the female takes care of the cubs herself, forming them into builder ants. Then the grown workers begin to build a nest, and the queen begins a new cycle of laying eggs, this time without the participation of the male.

Harm and benefits of ants

In nature, the carpenter ant brings great benefits, clearing forests of small parasites, fungi, and loosening the soil, but it becomes a real disaster for humans if it settles in a wooden house. Numerous passages appear in the walls, the wood turns into dust, losing its strength. And if you allow ants to continue to live within the walls of your house, then you risk being left without it at all.

Ways to fight

Folk remedies and chemicals will help get rid of woodworm infestations.

  • A concentrated emulsion for killing insects will help to effectively exterminate an ant colony. The most effective drug in this category is Deta. The drug is diluted in water according to the instructions, and the walls, furniture, and floor are sprayed. Broad spectrum insecticide causes paralysis and death. Mass mortality is observed after 2 weeks.
  • Some foods are known to be harmful to these insects. These are starch and coffee grounds. Place these products where ants travel. Woodworms eat food that is harmful to them themselves and drag it into the nest. They feed other relatives, larvae, and the queen. Death occurs a few days after the poison enters the stomach. The ants, suspecting nothing, continue to carry the poison into the nest.
  • You can poison a carpenter ant with boric acid by combining it with food products - sugar, honey, cookies with milk, jam, boiled yolk. Place baits in places where insects move.
  • You can expel them from the premises and prevent re-infection with garlic, tansy, mint, wormwood, as well as ammonia, vinegar, and birch tar.

Prevention

To prevent woodworms from appearing in your home, there are some rules you should follow. Branches that lean too close to the house need to be cut off. Do not leave trash heaps, fallen leaves and branches in the areas. Keep the house clean: do not leave dirty dishes, remove leftover food and cover the trash can. If you find a pile of ants near your house, then scatter substances with a pungent odor near it - turmeric, cinnamon or pepper.

Black ants in the house

Many people believe that ants live only in the wild and do not come close to people. Alas, situations are increasingly occurring when ants are found not on the street, but in your home. At first there are few of them. But as soon as the scouts explore the territory and they like it, expect an influx of “guests”. These impudent insects can take over your home in a short time. If this has already happened, it is urgent to take measures to destroy the ants.

Features of black ants

These insects are called black because of their dark color. The ant's body is divided into three segments: head, chest and abdomen. Antennas are located on the head, with the help of which ants communicate with each other. The insect has three pairs of legs, with the help of which the ant moves quickly.

In a colony, which consists of worker ants, males, females and a queen, the largest individual in size is the queen - her body length reaches 1 cm. Males and females do not exceed five millimeters in length, and worker ants grow up to 5–6 mm . Also, the queen is the leader in life expectancy among ants - under favorable conditions, she can live up to twenty-eight years. The working class lives from one to three years. But the males are unlucky - after the mating season, which lasts one month, they are destroyed by their own brothers.

The life of ants is considered the most organized among insect colonies. Thus, scout ants find places where food can be obtained and mark the road with special enzymes so that workers can accurately find food. Worker ants also monitor the condition of the anthill and care for the larvae. Ants feed on plant juice, seeds, and berries.

For uninterrupted production of labor, each colony has its own queen - a queen. Mating occurs in the last month of summer. After this, she lays eggs, which are then looked after by worker ants until they are fully mature.

Reasons for their appearance in the house

There may be several reasons why black ants decided to settle in your home. As you know, ants are attracted to sweet and pungent odors - accidentally thrown and forgotten candy, a piece of fruit, and the like effectively attract uninvited guests with their smell.

Or, with the onset of cold weather, the ants decided to find a warm place in which they can live comfortably. It is also worth mentioning the forced immigration of insects that were eradicated from the neighboring area.

How do ants get into the house?

Most often, insects enter a home through the foundation - ants are very small in size and it will not be difficult for them to crawl into the smallest crack. It may also be that a person, without noticing an ant on his clothes, can carry it inside. And he, in turn, having examined the territory, can invite his brothers to a housewarming party.

Benefits and harms of insects

Although ants are small in size, they can cause a lot of harm. By raiding food products, they can seriously spoil them. If the house is wooden, ants can settle inside the walls, gnawing out passages there. Personally, they can cause a lot of trouble for a person, sneaking into bed at night and interfering with sleep. Yes, and they bite noticeably. The benefits of ants in the house are questionable: they can only clean up crumbs and leftover food from the floor after you. So if you find these insects in your home, you should not hesitate to destroy them.

Ant Control Methods

Let's figure out how to get rid of these uninvited guests in your home. There are several methods - these include folk remedies and chemical preparations in the form of various sprays, gels and crayons. There are also special devices for repelling ants.

Folk remedies

Boric acid will help you destroy ants. It does not require large amounts of money and is effective in controlling insects. To kill ants, take a teaspoon of boric acid, dilute it in a large glass of water and generously sprinkle sugar into the water - this is guaranteed to attract ants to the bait. Then generously moisten the main paths of the insects with the solution.

If the “pilgrimage” of ants has just begun in your house, they can easily be repelled by herbs whose smell ants cannot stand: anise, wormwood, bay leaf, mint or lavender.

Simple garlic can also effectively cope with its task - by lubricating the paths of ants with it, you can easily throw them off the scent and discourage them from settling in your house.

One day, while washing the floors in the hall, I discovered a small cluster of black ants in the corner. Since my mother does not trust chemicals, it was decided to get rid of insects with garlic. We simply crushed the cloves and generously sprinkled them on the area where the ants accumulated. They really don't like the smell: they ran away in different directions and didn't get close to the garlic sprinkles. Laughing at the scurrying ants, I quickly crushed them and threw them away. I left the garlic for prevention.

Chemicals

Although folk remedies are effective, they do not provide a long-term effect - there is a possibility that after some time the ants will return. In this case, it is better to turn to drugs that are made specifically to combat insects. The toxic substances contained in them penetrate the ant's body, paralyzing the body. After this, the ant dies. Let's look at the most effective drugs.

Gel “Triple Impact” is a drug based on diazinon, cypermethrin and imidacloprid. The exposure time of the drug on the insect is about a day. Reapplication of the gel is necessary after three weeks - during this time it wears out and loses its effectiveness.

Raptor for crawling insects is the most famous and effective aerosol remedy for ants. Consists of deltamethrin, cypermethrin and piperonyl butoxide. The spray penetrates the insect's body and kills it by affecting the ant's nervous system.

DELICIA powder is a contact dust - it paralyzes the insect’s nervous system. The powder dissolves in water and is used to spray baseboards, crevices, and places where ants constantly move.

Difficulties in killing insects

Although various drugs destroy ants, there is a high probability that the poison will not reach the uterus along with other individuals. And then, most likely, the pilgrimage of insects will continue. If you destroy ants, and they continue to attack, then you will have to call exterminators. They will find a nest with a queen and professionally destroy the settlement.

Prevention of ants

To prevent ants from appearing in your home in the future, you should follow a few simple rules:

  • Do not leave food in the public domain - put it in cabinets or in the refrigerator.
  • Keep it clean - Remove bread crumbs from the table and floor, put food that has fallen on the floor in the trash can.
  • Wash the trash can from time to time with chlorine-containing detergents - the strong smell of bleach will repel insects.

Lifestyle of black carpenter ants

The nests of black carpenter ants are most often located in rotten tree stumps. Sometimes Camponotus vagus can be seen in hollows and wooden buildings. Like other members of the family, these ants live in large colonies. All individuals are divided into groups depending on their responsibilities:

  • builders;
  • hunters;
  • nannies;
  • soldiers;
  • females;
  • males.

Most arthropods belong to the first 3 groups. The lifespan of females is up to 28 years. Males live the shortest - they die immediately after mating. Apart from them, hunters have the shortest life expectancy, who rarely live up to 3 years.

The black carpenter ant is active during the daytime. Rarely leaves the shelter in cloudy weather. The only ones who are active at any time of the day are the soldiers. Among all the worker ants, the most common are builders.

Reproduction

Females and males capable of mating make up only a small part of the offspring. In the spring, at the end of April - beginning of May, they leave the anthill and go in search of partners. These individuals have wings, thanks to which they can move long distances. Mating occurs in the air. The fertilized female is looking for a place suitable for building a new anthill. There she chews off her wings, and her activity noticeably decreases.

The queen raises her first offspring on her own. One female mating is enough for the rest of her life. Thus, after the first offspring becomes adults, the female stops leaving the anthill. Nurses help the queen take care of subsequent larvae and eggs. However, the female still makes a large contribution to caring for the offspring.

Features of reproduction

The majority of the family consists of females who do not have the ability to fertilize; they are divided into certain clans - some are engaged in construction work, others are engaged in obtaining food, ensuring home safety, caring for the uterus, and feeding larvae.

A small proportion are young males and females. Every year, with the onset of warm weather, they begin the mating process. Woodworms are distinguished by the presence of wings; the flying female and male fly up and mate in the air. A successful mating process ends with the death of the males, as well as the search for a new home by the females, where they lay eggs.

Ant eggs

The uterus independently raises, feeds and raises the first children. After which she is engaged in the formation of working individuals from them, which subsequently begin construction of the nest, and the female lays eggs further for procreation.

Reproduction is endless, and the colony is replenished with new individuals weekly. Gradually, each queen's duties are transferred to the worker clan - they care for the larvae, feed from and serve their queen-queen. Further, the queen of the family is responsible only for laying eggs.

It should be noted that one fertilization for a female is enough to reproduce offspring throughout her life. The maximum lifespan of the woodworm queen is 28 years. Working members of the family live inside the nest for about 5 years, builders/hunters/food getters - no more than three years.

Why is the black carpenter ant dangerous?

The carpenter ant is useful for nature: it cleans forests of small parasites and fungi, and also loosens the soil, but for humans the ant can be a pest.

The insect reproduces quickly and is unpretentious to living conditions. Carpenter ants do not feed on wood. It makes tunnels in it, reducing the strength of the material and promoting rot. It is important to know that the black carpenter ant often damages supporting structures near the base. This creates a risk of the building collapsing.

Like other types of ants, the black carpenter ant can bite humans. Although such a bite does not pose a significant threat, it can cause an allergic reaction. It manifests itself especially often in young children.

Allergy symptoms most often include:

  • nausea;
  • labored breathing;
  • pale skin;
  • tachycardia;
  • dizziness.

Camponotus vagus are quite aggressive ants. Their bites are extremely dangerous for newborns.

It is also important to consider that the black carpenter ant is a carrier of many diseases. Infection can occur through any objects that have been visited by pests.

Carpenter ants can carry the following diseases:

  • salmonellosis;
  • helminthiasis;
  • dysentery;
  • cholera;
  • typhoid fever.

Rarely does an insect cause diphtheria infection.

The carpenter ant poses a serious threat not only to people, but also to pets. It can carry such dangerous diseases for animals as parvovirus enteritis.

The pest often damages food. It is important to understand that eating such food is unacceptable. This is justified not only by the low nutritional value and lack of useful elements, but also by the extremely high risk of infection by diseases carried by the carpenter ant.

Signs of infection

Black carpenter ants are fairly easy to spot because they do not hide and are most active during the daytime. In addition, insects constantly follow certain routes and always move in large groups. In places where ants create tunnels, wood dust remains.

Methods for controlling these pests

To get rid of woodworms, you first need to make sure your home is inaccessible to them. Ants prefer damp wood, so you can expect them to appear in the kitchen or bathroom. To avoid this you must:

  • Carefully plaster all cracks near pipes, ventilation holes, various installations, and also seal all cracks in the walls, even small ones.
  • Create barriers for ants in places where there is a possibility of them entering the house. To do this, you can buy special preparations and spray these places with them.
  • Keep the house clean so that scout ants doubt its suitability for them.
  • All food supplies must be stored in closed containers to prevent ants from getting to them.

But if, after all, the carpenter ant decides to pay attention to the structure it has chosen, then there are several types of fight against it. These types include: traditional methods, the use of chemicals and calling professional disinfectors (as a last resort).

Control measures

You can and should fight against woodworm in order to save the life of a tree or even an entire garden. Various methods are used for this: mechanical, chemical, biological.

Mechanical methods

Mechanical methods of combating odorous woodworm involve thoroughly cleaning damaged trees from pest-infested bark and collecting as many larvae as possible. This can only be done manually so as not to harm the trunk.

Infested bark

Infested bark

All collected biomaterial must be burned immediately. Damage to the tree is covered with a special compound - garden varnish, which is a mixture of water with slaked lime and clay. Lime and clay are taken in a ratio of 2:1 and diluted with water until the consistency of sour cream. The clay in this composition can be replaced with copper sulfate (for 2 kg of lime you need 200-250 g of sulfate). The effect will be even greater.

In the second half of summer and early autumn, it is necessary to regularly examine the crowns of trees, cut off all diseased branches, and cut down trees in critical condition without regret.

Chemical control measures

The chemical method is based on the use of organophosphorus insecticides (karbofos, chlorophos, etc.): you need to soak cotton swabs with the insecticide and place them in the holes gnawed by the caterpillars. The insecticidal agent can be introduced into the labyrinths made by the pest using a syringe or syringe.

Biological methods

The biological method consists of actively attracting birds whose food is insects (woodpeckers, rooks, magpies, etc.) into gardens and parks. To do this, birdhouses and feeders with a variety of food are hung on trees.

Folk ways to get rid of misfortune

The mechanism of action of folk methods has not been specifically studied, so it is not known how this or that remedy for wood ants works. However, the effectiveness of natural methods has been confirmed by centuries of use in village and merchant houses as protection against insects, to remove woodworms in wooden buildings of the past.

Vinegar

To get rid of pests, their entry points are lubricated. Wood ants will have to be tracked down. If the “guests” cannot be detected, you can spray acetic acid concentrate in the suspected insect nesting area.

In order to prevent the appearance of woodworms in wooden and frame houses, wet cleaning with slightly acidic vinegar water is recommended. In case of severe infestation, walls and baseboards are sprayed with essence (work is carried out in personal protective equipment).

Toxic crayons

This is a modern remedy based on substances toxic to arthropods: fipramil and citermipil. In the fight against ants, Chinese chalk for cockroaches is used, as well as Russian chalk for insect pests “Mashenka” and “Titan”. Thanks to its special consistency, the composition is well applied and retained on the surface of the wood.

The processing technique is simple: outline the expected trajectory of the ants’ movement and the areas where they may appear. The insect crosses the “fatal” lines and receives a lethal dose of poison, but most often does not die immediately. Many individuals still have the strength to get into the nest and infect several more relatives.

Pepper

Ground red pepper and crushed chili are destructive for ants. Powder is sprinkled on the paths favored by ants. Black pepper has a weaker effect, but it will still repel parasitic insects and slightly reduce their numbers.

Sagebrush

Wood ants do not like the bitterness of this herb. Wormwood powder is good for sprinkling cracks in the house, attic spaces, and the perimeter in front of the house. The treatment should not be removed for 1-2 months (as the grass layer decreases, it must be renewed). After 2-3 months, the activity of illegal residents will noticeably decrease, or even disappear.

Citrus

Insects are repelled by essential oils and the smell of fruits. To protect wooden walls and structures from ants, it is enough to anoint the suspicious area with a slice of orange, grapefruit or lemon. To prevent the appearance of wood pests in the house, it is recommended to scatter dry citrus peels in the corners.

Tomato leaves

To remove the carpenter ant population, tomato tops are laid out around the perimeter of the room. Another way is to infuse the green mass of any nightshade crops (potato leaves, eggplants) in water and spray the room with the solution, paying special attention to secluded corners or identified anthills.

Cinnamon, curry and turmeric

Spicy herbs are effective against the annoying pilgrimage of insects. They repel wood pests with a strong odor based on volatile ether compounds. If an ant gets into the herbal powder, it gets poisoned. Method of using herbal remedies: the powder is scattered along the path of insect movement.

Black soap solution

An inexpensive, effective and completely safe product is produced industrially. The solution will help rid the house of wood insects for a long time: aphids, nematodes, mites, pathogenic fungi and ants. It is based on natural ingredients: conifer resins, potassium salts of fatty acids, cedar resin, natural essential oils with an odor intolerable to pests.

Folk methods of struggle

If chemical methods cannot be used, they try to use folk remedies:

  • Fill the nest with boiling water or vinegar. In this case, a significant part of the ants die.
  • Use garlic arrows (put them in an anthill). Insects are afraid of this strong smell.
  • A dish with sugar syrup bait is placed near the anthill. Ants crawl into it to feed and drown there.
  • They mix yeast with water and sugar or coffee grounds, which kill insects.
  • Prepare black soap by mixing 400 g of laundry soap, 200 g of kerosene and carboxylic acid (2 tbsp). Dilute with warm water and fill the anthill. Repeat after 2 days 3 times.
  • To destroy an anthill, this method is only suitable if it is located away from home. Fill it with kerosene and set it on fire.

You can use one or more different methods to get rid of carpenter ants.

Using chemicals against wood ants

How to fight carpenter ants using chemicals can be found in their instructions. The most effective drugs are: “Kieselguhr”, “Delta Dust”, Kon (do not use if there is a cat in the house, it is fatal for it), “Expel” (powder), as well as “Mrowkofon”, which is sold in granules.

Ultrasonic repellers are very effective. You can also use ordinary crayons against cockroaches, using them to outline the territory of ant paths.

If there are wood ants in your house, companies that specialize in providing services for removing these insects will tell you how to get rid of them. But it is worth considering that if you contact them, you will need to leave the house for a couple of days to completely disinfect it.
