Anthelmintic and antiparasitic

Forms of release of funds

In a good half of cases, veterinarians prescribe broad-spectrum products, that is, universal drugs, to kill worms and fleas. If you adhere to the dosages specified in the instructions and do not exceed them, the level of toxicity will be minimized.

Form factor of drugs:

  • pills;
  • drops;
  • suspensions.

Drugs

Drugs

Important! At the first signs of parasite infection, it is necessary to immediately begin treatment. Both fleas and helminths multiply very quickly, causing associated complications.

The most convenient products to use are insectoacaricidal drops for cats. Unlike tablet drugs, they do not need to be crushed and diluted. Preparations in suspension format are something between tablets and drops. They can be mixed into food: pates, mousses, or dripped directly into the animal’s mouth.

Where to contact in case of complaints?

If the use of the collar causes complications, you should stop using it. Then the consumer contacts the State Veterinary Clinic to which he is geographically attached. The clinic specialist carefully studies compliance with all the rules and regulations specified in the instructions. If the doctor confirms the negative effect of the drug on the animal’s body or the product does not meet the stated standards, then he draws up a special report. The report, together with samples of the problematic drug, is sent by a veterinarian to the “Belarusian State Veterinary Center” (Minsk, Krasnaya St., 19a) to test the product for compliance with the requirements of regulatory documents.

Why are deworming drops on the withers more convenient than deworming tablets?

First of all, it is the speed of return . Until the tablet is completely dissolved in the gastrointestinal tract, which takes a lot of time, it is not effective. As soon as the drops against fleas and worms for cats are on the withers, they immediately begin to act.

In addition, the tablets must first be crushed and hidden in food . Due to illness and loss of appetite, the pet may completely refuse the food offered. Anthelmintic drops on the withers for cats are much more convenient in this regard. As for prices, good drugs cost almost the same regardless of the form factor.

The principle of action of drops on the withers against worms

Each drug contains an active substance that is destructive to the parasite, but less toxic to the animal. After applying drops of fleas and worms to the pet's withers, the product spreads over the skin, while some part is absorbed into the blood.

Most drugs last about 24 hours. During this time, the active substance spreads across the cat’s skin, killing not only adult fleas, but also the eggs they lay. Drops provide protection against helminths for 20-30 days.

Important! The approach to the problem must be comprehensive. If there are other pets in the house, then they also need to be treated with insecticides, even if there are no symptoms of infestation.

The effectiveness of generic drugs

The effectiveness of modern flea and worm medications for cats depends on the active substance. As a rule, the more expensive the product, the more effective it is. But the choice of one drug or another depends on the degree of invasion, the pet’s well-being and its age. For example, the concentration of the active substance in solutions for kittens is noticeably lower than in similar products for adults.

For reference! If your pet is attacked by numerous parasites: worms, fleas, ticks and others, then it makes sense to consult a veterinarian. The specialist will prescribe the necessary treatment, as well as select the most effective drugs for each specific case.

Once in the insect's body, diazinon blocks the transmission of messages between nerve cells. After some time, paralysis of the neuromuscular system occurs, which leads to the death of insects. Diazinon also has a repellent effect, i.e. ability to repel insects.

What is the difference between drops against fleas and worms and drops against fleas and ticks?

Remedies for blood-sucking insects and worms differ in their method of action. The key components of preparations for fleas and ixodid ticks are insectoacaricides. They are fixed on the surface layer of the skin and do not penetrate further than the hair follicles. Such products remain effective for about a month. However, they do not affect internal parasites in any way.

Drops against fleas and helminths work a little differently. The active substances penetrate deep into the skin and subsequently enter the animal’s circulatory system. Thus, the product helps to destroy both external and internal parasites. If the drug is good enough, the effect lasts for 2-3 weeks.

For reference! When your pet suffers only from blood-sucking insects, it is more advisable to buy a remedy for fleas, ticks and other external parasites. In this case, flea and helminth medications will be less effective.

How to use drops against fleas and worms in cats?

Withers preparations for cats are often called “spot-on”. If you follow the instructions, the area between the shoulder blades is subject to treatment, which eliminates possible contact of the insecticide with the animal’s tongue. But especially flexible pets can lick this place too.

In such cases, veterinarians recommend applying the drug slightly above the withers - on the scruff of the neck. However, you cannot treat the area between the cat’s ears. If there are children in the house, then after applying the product, their contact with the pet should be excluded for at least two days.

Application order:

  1. The animal's skin must be clean and dry.
  2. Prepare the drug for use: break according to the indicated mark.
  3. Spread the fur at the withers so that the skin is visible.
  4. Carefully apply the drops, trying to distribute them by at least 2-3 cm, and not concentrate them in one place.

How to use

How to use

At the end of the procedure, hands must be washed thoroughly. Immediately after applying the pet, you need to distract your pet with something for about 10 minutes until the drops are absorbed: give him a treat or play with him.

Important! When treatment is carried out on two or more animals, they should be placed in different rooms. Otherwise, they will lick each other, which can lead to poisoning.

“Drops on the withers ZOOLEKAR” for cats

“Drops on the withers ZOOLEKAR” for cats (“Guttae ZOOLEKAR” pro cattus) is an insecto-acaricidal drug, which is a transparent liquid from light yellow to yellow.

1.0 cm3 of the drug contains fipronil 60.0 mg, auxiliary and formative substances.

The drug is packaged in polymer tube-pipettes or glass vials with a pipette cap of 1.0 cm3.

The drug is stored with caution (list B) at a temperature from 0°C to plus 30°C, in a dry place, protected from light.

Shelf life: 2 (two) years from the date of manufacture.

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Fipronil belongs to the group of phenylpyrazoles. Fipronil is active against the preimaginal and imaginal phases of development of lice, fleas, lice and ticks (ixodidae, cheylitella), parasitizing cats.

The mechanism of action of fipronil is to block GABA-dependent (GABA - γ-aminobutyric acid) receptors of parasites, disrupting the transmission of nerve impulses, which leads to paralysis and death of ectoparasites.

The drug is not absorbed, but gradually, over the course of a day, is distributed over the surface of the body and is localized in the outer air cuticle of the hair, being reserved in the sebaceous glands, thereby ensuring a long-term contact effect on the parasite. The death of insects parasitizing the animal occurs after 8 hours, and ixodid ticks - after 48 hours. The protective effect of the drug against ixodid ticks in cats lasts up to 1 month, against adult insects up to 3 months.

The drug "Drops on the withers ZOOLEKAR" for cats according to the GOST 12.1.007 classification belongs to hazard class 4 - low-hazard substances. Upon contact with mucous membranes, it causes mild irritation.

The drug is toxic to fish, bees and reptiles.

ORDER OF APPLICATION OF THE DRUG

“ZOOLEKAR drops on the withers” for cats are used to combat fleas, lice, lice and ticks (ixodidae, cheylitella) in cats.

“ZOOLEKAR drops on the withers” for cats are used externally for all breeds of cats.

Before treatment, cut off the tip of the pipette, spread the animal’s fur and, pressing the pipette, apply the drug to one or several points on the skin in places inaccessible to licking by animals (in the back area (between the shoulder blades) or in the neck area, at the base of the skull) in the doses indicated in the table:

This is interesting: Why does the kitten have diarrhea?

To protect cats in the spring-summer-autumn period from ixodid ticks, animals are treated once a month, and from insects - once every 3 months.

If a tick is found on a cat's body, the drug is applied to the tick in an amount of one or two drops at the site of its attachment to the skin. If the tick does not fall off spontaneously within 20 minutes, it is carefully pulled out of the skin with tweezers and destroyed.

It is recommended to wash animals no earlier than 48 hours after treatment with the drug.

If the animal is severely infested with lice, fleas, or lice eaters, it is recommended to treat once a month. If the animal is washed more than twice a month, the animal is treated once every 3 weeks.

In order to prevent re-infestation by fleas, it is necessary to replace the animal's bedding, or treat it with the drug at the rate of 0.5 ml per 100 cm² of surface, applying the drug in strips, leave for 3 days, and wash with detergent before subsequent use.

When using the drug, it is not allowed to use other insecto-acaricidal agents.

In recommended doses, the drug does not cause side effects.

If there is increased individual sensitivity to the components of the drug and signs of allergic reactions appear, the treatment is stopped, the drug is washed off with water, and antihistamines are given orally.

Animals with infectious diseases and recovering animals, as well as kittens under 8 weeks of age, are not subject to treatment.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

When working with the drug, you should follow the rules of personal hygiene and safety precautions.

If the drug gets on the mucous membranes, it must be washed off immediately with plenty of water.

PROCEDURE FOR SUBMISSION OF COMPLAINTS

If complications arise after using the drug, its use is stopped and the consumer contacts the State Veterinary Institution in whose territory it is located. Veterinary specialists of this institution study compliance with all rules for the use of the drug in accordance with the instructions. If it is confirmed that the drug has a negative effect on the animal’s body or that the drug does not correspond in appearance, veterinary specialists take samples in the required quantity for laboratory testing, draw up a sampling report and send it to the State Institution “Belarusian State Veterinary Center” (Minsk, Krasnaya str., 19a) to confirm the compliance of the drug with regulatory documentation.

Precautionary measures

The use of any insecticidal preparations is fraught with allergic reactions, so you should consult a veterinarian before use. It is better to buy such chemicals in specialized stores. Very often, veterinary clinics have their own pharmacy. At best, counterfeit products will be ineffective, and at worst, they will harm the pet’s health.

Contraindications to the use of insecticides:

  1. Kittens under 2 months of age.
  2. Pregnant and lactating cats.
  3. The presence of infectious or viral diseases.
  4. Postoperative period.
  5. A pronounced allergic reaction to the active substance of the drug.

When a pet has a weakened immune system, such aggressive chemicals will do more harm than good. In such cases, you cannot self-medicate and you cannot do without a visit to the veterinary clinic. Some drugs are designed for a specific breed of cat, which also needs to be taken into account.

Popular deworming remedies in the form of drops

The effectiveness of the drug directly depends on its active ingredients and their combinations. Expensive drugs usually last longer, maintaining a preventive effect for up to 2 months. In addition, the drops should not have a cumulative effect, since they are used to treat subcutaneous mites, and in this case the cat is treated more often.

Do not pay attention to advertising slogans and inscriptions on packs. When choosing a drug for worms, immediately take out the instructions. The first thing you are interested in is the active ingredients. Most drops contain either fipronil or intermectin, to which some animals have an allergic reaction.

In addition to the names of the active ingredients, you need to pay attention to the dosage. The next point of the instructions that interests you is the spectrum of action of the drug. It happens that on the package with the proud inscription “8 in 1” they forget to mention that the drug does not act on common types of helminths.

The next nuance concerns dirofilariasis - heartworms. Dirofilariasis cannot be overcome with drops, even in theory. This disease requires an integrated approach, examinations and careful treatment under the supervision of a veterinarian. The same can be said about the treatment of demodicosis, otodecosis and other diseases caused by subcutaneous mites.

All anti-worm drops are characterized by toxicity, but depending on the composition, the degree of threat may vary. If your pet is weakened or you do not know its history, it is strictly not recommended to use drugs with the third degree of toxicity. Drugs of the first and second degree of toxicity are considered “weak”; they have almost no effect on the eggs and adults of parasites. At the same time, low-toxic drugs do not have a harmful effect on organs.

Drops Profender

Profender is a popular and famous drug from the well-known company Bayer. The drug is available in individual pipettes with a capacity of 0.35, 0.7 and 1.2 ml. The box has a “Spot-on” label, which means that the drug is for external use only. Main active ingredients: emodepside and praziquantel.

Profender is considered an effective broad-spectrum drug. The main active ingredients destroy the class of parasites:

  • Toxocara, parasitic in the gastrointestinal tract and migrating with the bloodstream - larvae, eggs, adults.
  • Toxascariasis at all stages of development.
  • Hookworm at all stages of development.
  • Alveococci.
  • Tapeworms, including borage (dipylidia).
  • Taeniasis (muscle tapeworm).
  • Echinococcosis.

Profender acts in several directions at once: it blocks the absorption of glucose, leads to disruption of nervous activity and a decrease in membrane conductivity. The complex action leads to the rapid death of worms at all stages of development and their natural “exit” from the body.

Important! Profender drops are not recommended for use in cases of skin damage and acute dermatological ailments.

The drug is applied to dry skin of the withers or back of the head. If you are afraid that the cat may lick the drug, you can bathe it no earlier than 2 hours after applying the drops.

The drug is not used to prevent helminthic infestation in kittens under two months of age and for animals weighing less than 0.5 kg.

The dosage is determined by weight:

  • For cats weighing from 0.5 to 2.5 kg - a 0.35 ml pipette.
  • For cats weighing from 2.5 to 5 kg - a 0.7 ml pipette.
  • For cats weighing from 5 to 8 kg - 1.2 ml pipette.

Note! If the cat weighs more than 8 kg, the dosage is calculated from the proportion of 0.14 ml of the drug per 1 kg. body weight.

In case of overdose, the following may be observed: vomiting, diarrhea, apathy, increased salivation, tremor. If symptoms of overdose are detected, the area where the drops are applied should be washed with shampoo. If there is no positive dynamics or a decrease in base body temperature, you must immediately consult a veterinarian!

Stronghold

Stronghold is considered one of the best complex drugs for the prevention of parasites in pets. The drug is produced by the well-known manufacturer Pfizer and has earned a very good reputation in the market.

Drops are available in pipettes:

  • Capacity 0.25 and 0.75 ml - concentration 6%.
  • Capacity from 0.25 to 2 ml - concentration 12%.

Important! Due to its high cost and publicity, Stronghold is often counterfeited! Be careful and purchase drops only from certified sellers.

The main active ingredient is selamectin. The drug acts on the principle of a neuroparalytic poison, the spectrum affects internal and external parasites.

Drops are used for:

  • Helminthic diseases: nematode, toxocariasis, dirofilariasis, all roundworms and their larvae.
  • Infestations by skin parasites: fleas, pasture ticks.
  • Infestation by subcutaneous mites: otodectosis, sarcoptic mange.
  • Skin ailments, including dermatitis.

Stronghold is for external use only. Drops are not recommended for use in kittens under 1.5 months of age. Drops should not be applied to damaged skin. Usually the product is applied to the back of the head or withers, only on dry skin. The dosage of the drug depends on weight. Pipettes of different sizes are available for animals of different sizes.

Important! Stronghold is highly flammable, so the treated animal should not be allowed near open sources of fire until the fur is completely dry.

Deworming drops Inspector

Inspector is a well-known drug for the immediate elimination of external and internal parasites. For cats, use Inspector Total K drops. The drug is packaged in individual pipettes of different capacities (0.4 and 0.8 ml). Main active ingredients: fipronil and moxidectin.

According to the manufacturers, the spectrum of action of the drops affects more than 10 families of parasites and maintains a preventive effect for at least 2 months.

  • Lice and lice infestations.
  • Infestations by intestinal parasites – toxocariasis, toxascariasis, uncinariasis, hookworm.
  • Heartworm and lungworm infestations.

Note! The inspector in the form of drops can be used to treat pregnant and lactating cats, but under the supervision of a veterinarian.

The dosage of drops is calculated by weight:

  • For cats weighing up to 4 kg, a 0.4 ml pipette is used.
  • For cats weighing more than 4 kg - a 0.8 ml pipette.
  • If the animal weighs less than 1 kg, treatment is carried out under the supervision of a doctor.
  • The drug is strictly not recommended for use in kittens under 1.5 months of age.

Important! After using the drops, the cat should not be bathed for at least 4 days.

Dironet

Dironet is a universal drug for the prevention of infestations by external and internal parasites in cats. Main active ingredients: praziquantel and ivermectin. Cat owner forums are filled with controversy about the effectiveness and safety of Dironet. Positive and negative reviews seem to be very relevant, so before using the drug, it is better to consult a veterinarian.

Important! The drug is strictly not recommended for use in animals that have individual sensitivity to ivermectin.

The drug destroys parasites by increasing the sensitivity of their membranes to chlorine ions. Upon contact with the active substances, the parasites are immobilized and die. Intestinal worms are eliminated naturally within 24 hours.

The spectrum of action of the drug extends to:

  • Nematodes at any stage of development.
  • Hookworms.
  • Vlasoglavov.
  • Cestodes.
  • Skin parasites - fleas, ticks, lice, lice.
  • Subcutaneous parasites - demodicosis, otodectosis, sarcoptic mange, notoedrosis.

Important! The drug cannot be used to treat: kittens under 2 months of age, pregnant and lactating cats, weakened animals. In case of severe and prolonged infestation, treatment is carried out under the supervision of a physician.

The drug is applied to dry, intact skin. Complete absorption occurs within 2 hours. The active substances are absorbed into the bloodstream and distributed to all organs. The dosage is calculated based on the proportion of 1 pipette per 5 kg. body weight. As prescribed by the doctor, the dosage may be increased.

Leopard

Bars - drops for the prevention of skin and intestinal worms in cats. Due to the popularity of the brand, the drug is often counterfeited. Forums are heatedly discussing the pros and cons of the product; it must be said that there are more negative reviews.

The drug is available in pipettes with a capacity of 0.1 and 0.4 ml. Active ingredients: fipronil and permethrin. The drug is classified as a third class of danger; in other words, it is quite toxic and there is a high probability of adverse reactions.

Important! Cats with urolithiasis have a very difficult time tolerating Bars drops.

The spectrum of the drug includes fleas, lice, ticks, roundworms and tapeworms. However, Bars cannot be used for kittens under 2 months of age, pregnant and lactating cats, and weakened animals.

Drops are applied to dry, intact skin in a strict dosage:

  • Kittens and adult cats up to 5 kg – 1 pipette.
