Small blood-sucking parasites such as furniture bugs choose secluded places in human apartments to live. These insects are synanthropes, that is, they live next to humans and are to some extent dependent on them. Insects dominated the Earth long before humans appeared. Over millions of years, bedbugs have acquired truly limitless adaptive abilities. It is for this reason that it is very difficult to fight them - insects quickly develop resistance to poisons, and mechanical methods of extermination are ineffective due to the high reproduction rate.

Habitats of bedbugs and their larvae

In order for the fight against bedbugs at home to be effective, it is necessary to determine the habitats of the parasites and their larvae. This will allow the area to be thoroughly processed and the population destroyed. Bedbugs often live on bookshelves, in old drawers and boxes, behind pictures on the walls, in travel bags and suitcases, shoes, linen closets, window curtains, and flooring. In hard-to-reach places, it is more difficult to detect places where insects accumulate. Bedbugs can live in electrical outlets, holes and cracks in walls and floors, radio, audio and television equipment, any appliances, and ventilation ducts.

Getting rid of bedbugs by freezing

In Siberia, especially in rural areas, they know well how to deal with bedbugs by freezing them out. This method may not be known to city residents. Freezing out bedbugs is a simple but troublesome procedure. When severe frost sets in, the owners and their animals leave the house for several days, leaving the windows wide open.

When indoor temperatures drop to -22 °C or lower, bedbugs and their eggs die. If the house is heated using radiator batteries that use water as a coolant, it is necessary to drain it so as not to defrost the pipes.

To use this method, you need real frosts, so it can only be used in regions with severe winters. One of the options for freezing bedbugs is to take furniture out into the cold along with the adult insects and eggs in it. This method is easier to perform, but bedbugs that hide in walls and floors remain alive unless they are treated with some kind of insecticide.

Review

Previously, we usually poisoned insects with Kombat. A good remedy, but it does not guarantee complete destruction of insects. For the reason that it needs to be sprayed in all places where bedbugs are located, but how can they be identified if it is impossible to penetrate there? If you treat the bedbugs you find, you get a break for a while, and then they multiply again. I decided to try the old Siberian method - freezing. I took the sofa outside and left it there for 4 days. The nights were cold, the temperature dropped to -30 °C. The method turned out to be very effective. Every single one of the bugs froze. It's a pity that it can only be used in severe frosts. Nowadays, even in Siberia, temperatures below -25 °C are observed less and less often.

Home methods for controlling bedbugs

Means for controlling bedbugs at home can be divided into radical killing and preventive repellent. If you find parasites in your apartment, it is better to first try to get rid of them completely, and then use a repellent to prevent further insects from entering the apartment. Certain chemicals, concentrated essential oils, and certain types of plants will not kill bedbugs, but will only repel the insects. This is a good preventative or anti-relapse agent.

When the degree of infestation is high, repellent measures are completely useless. The fight against bed bugs at home is most often carried out with special preparations. Modern means are safe for humans and effective, but protective measures must be observed. Insecticides are sold in the form of gels, aerosols, liquids, powders, crayons, and so on. The most effective are liquid insecticides and powder-based solutions. Gels and pastes are best used as barrier preventive protection due to their long residual effect. You should start fighting bedbugs in your apartment yourself only after preparing the premises. Additionally, protective equipment must be provided.

In general, all existing methods of controlling bedbugs at home are divided into five groups according to the method of influence: physical or temperature; mechanical means; traditional methods proven over the years; removal of parasites with insecticides; ultrasonic repellers. When choosing a method, you need to focus on the number of insects in the apartment. In case of large-scale infestation, it is worth starting with aggressive chemicals, and if there are few bedbugs, then temperature and mechanical methods are effective. It is best to combine several methods and means of fighting bedbugs at home. If the methods used are ineffective, it may make sense to contact a pest control service.
