Medifox - an effective remedy for lice and nits

The Moscow Research and Production Center “Fox & Co” is engaged in the development and production of drugs for medical and veterinary disinfection. One of the company’s products, Medifox, designed to combat lice and scabies mites, has proven to be highly effective in the sanitary treatment of people and special detention centers heavily infested with ectoparasites.

Medifox is intended to combat lice and scabies mites.

Release forms and composition of the drug

The medication is available to patients in the form of a solution with different concentrations of the active ingredient and a gel for external use. The solution can have a concentration of 5 or 20%. It is a liquid with a specific aroma, packaged in ampoules or bottles of different volumes.

The gel is packaged in 50 g tubes. It has a standard consistency and density, as well as a pungent odor. Both dosage forms are considered equally effective and contain the main active ingredient permethrin, the concentration of which may differ.

The solution contains auxiliary ingredients:

  • Ethanol.
  • Butyl acetate.
  • Castor oil.

The gel also contains auxiliary substances in the form of functional additives and a gelling agent. A solution with a concentration of active ingredient of 20% also contains kerosene, fragrance and surfactants. Additional substances do not have a therapeutic effect.

Composition of the drug

Medifox can be purchased in the form of a gel and emulsion. Each mold is intended for external use only. The emulsion contains 5 g of active substance. The gel can be purchased in several concentrations.

In addition to permethrin, Medifox contains:

  • butyl acetate;
  • Castor oil;
  • ethanol

You can purchase the emulsion in half-liter containers, in bottles of 2 and 24 ml.
Small packages contain not just an emulsion, but a concentrate that must be diluted before use. Medifox, which is offered in ampoules, comes with a small ampoule knife. Everything is packed in cardboard boxes. In addition, the drug can be purchased in gel form. For scabies, this form of the drug may be more convenient to use. The volume of the tube is 50 g.

As for how much the product costs, the price depends on the form of the drug and the quantity of the drug. The gel costs on average 150 rubles, and the emulsion can cost from 100 to 2000 rubles.

Pharmacological properties

Medifox for scabies (reviews may vary, due to the characteristics of the patient’s body) is used due to the content of permethrin as the main active component. The substance has pronounced therapeutic properties because it affects parasites that multiply and develop on the patient’s skin.

The drug has antiparasitic properties, helps stop the proliferation of microorganisms and prevents the development of the inflammatory process. As a result, the skin pores are cleansed not only from adult parasites, but also from underdeveloped parasites, which subsequently provoke a relapse of the disease.

Additionally, the product has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can significantly shorten the recovery period. In some cases, a single use is sufficient to obtain a pronounced therapeutic result. One of the advantages of the medicine is considered to have an anti-pediculosis effect.

Gel

As indicated in the instructions for use of Medifox, the gel effectively eliminates parasites upon contact with them. The medicine is practically non-toxic, therefore, if all instructions are followed, it does not provoke allergic reactions.

The gel has a systemic effect, eliminating not only living organisms, but also their larvae. The drug paralyzes the nerve cells of parasites, eliminating them. When applied to the skin, Medifox has a low-toxic effect on the patient's body.

For head lice, the gel is applied once to the skin to maintain the pharmacological effect for at least 2-3 weeks. Treatment of scabies is also carried out in a single dose - this is enough to achieve a positive effect.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

The medication is applied externally. After contact with the skin, it begins to actively act on parasites localized in the pores of the skin. As a result, there is a significant reduction in their number and gradual restoration of the affected areas of the skin.

The principle of action of the medicine is based on the ability of permethrin to act on the body of parasites and provoke paralysis. By blocking sodium channels, the conduction of nerve impulses to muscle fibers deteriorates, which leads to immobilization of the parasite.

As a result, the causative agents of pathologies die, the skin is gradually cleansed, signs of inflammation and irritation are eliminated, and severe itching, which is considered the most unpleasant manifestation of many disorders, disappears.

One of the advantages of the product is considered to be the ability to paralyze not only adults, but also eggs, lice larvae, and ticks. As a result, the likelihood of re-development of the pathology is almost completely eliminated if the drug was used correctly.

After the product penetrates the skin, its absorption into the systemic bloodstream almost does not occur. However, the ingredients penetrate not only the top layer of the skin, but also the dermis, which ensures maximum effectiveness. It is impossible to detect the concentration of active ingredients in the blood, which proves low absorption.

Despite this, the product is absorbed into the blood quite quickly through damaged tissue. After this, it is processed in the liver and excreted from the body through the kidneys and intestines. The active ingredient can remain in the pores of the skin for several weeks, which ensures maximum effectiveness after the first use.

After this, the weakened substance is excreted with sebum and with the help of sweat glands. Repeated use does not lead to the accumulation of a large amount of product in the skin pores, which is considered an advantage, since it significantly reduces the risk of complications.

In patients who suffer from chronic forms of dermatological diseases or have lesions on the skin, there is an increased absorption of ingredients into the body, which can lead to complications. Despite this, the product can be used with caution in case of urgent need.

Instructions for medical use of the drug

Description of pharmacological action

The action is due to a violation of the ion permeability of sodium channels and inhibition of the processes of polarization (repolarization) of the membrane of nerve cells of lice, fleas, mites (including scabies) and other ectoparasites of the arthropod family, which leads to a paralyzing effect.

Indications for use

Pediculosis of the scalp, lice pubis, scabies.

Release form

substance-mass crystalline; can 25 kg; substance-mass crystalline; polymer container 25 kg;

Pharmacodynamics

The action is due to a violation of the ion permeability of sodium channels and inhibition of the processes of polarization (repolarization) of the membrane of nerve cells of lice, fleas, mites (including scabies) and other ectoparasites of the arthropod family, which leads to a paralyzing effect.

Pharmacokinetics

After cutaneous application, absorption is no more than 2%. Part of the substance that enters the systemic circulation is quickly hydrolyzed to inactive metabolites, excreted primarily in the urine. With a single treatment of surfaces affected by pediculosis, the anti-pediculosis effect lasts from 2-3 to 6 weeks (depending on the dosage form used). Effective as an anti-scabies agent.

Use during pregnancy

During pregnancy, it is possible if the expected effect of therapy exceeds the potential risk to the fetus (adequate and strictly controlled studies of the safety of use in pregnant women have not been conducted). FDA category of effect on the fetus is B.

Contraindications for use

Hypersensitivity (including to other synthetic pyrethroids, chrysanthemums and other plants containing pyrethrins), lactation period (for the treatment of scabies), children under 1 year of age (for emulsion), up to 6 months (for cream).

Side effects

Local reactions - burning sensation, tingling or tingling, skin numbness, increased itching, erythema, allergic reactions (skin rashes, swelling).

Directions for use and doses

Externally. For pediculosis - 1% cream or 0.5% lotion using a cotton swab is evenly applied to moistened scalp hair or scalp (for lice pubis), rubbing into the roots of the hair (the head can be covered with a scarf), leave for 10 (1% cream ) or 40 minutes (0.5% lotion), then rinse thoroughly with warm running water and soap or shampoo and dry in the usual way. The hair is combed with a fine comb to remove nits and dead lice; If live lice are found, the treatment is repeated after 7 days. If there is a danger of re-infection in a group, after washing the hair, moisten the scalp with the drug (or thoroughly wipe it) and wait until the hair is dry (do not wash or dry it). The drug applied to the hair retains its activity for approximately 2 weeks (it does not allow lice that have returned to the hair to multiply). For scabies, use a solution in the form of a freshly prepared 0.4% aqueous emulsion, which is thoroughly rubbed once a day (at night) into the skin of the upper extremities, torso, and then lower extremities for 3 days in a row. The skin of the face and neck, as well as the scalp, cannot be treated. On the fourth day, the patient should take a shower and change his underwear and bed linen.

Overdose

In case of ingestion, gastric lavage and symptomatic therapy are necessary.

Precautions for use

It is necessary to avoid contact with the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, mouth, and external genitalia (if this happens, the mucous membranes are washed generously with running water). Medical personnel are recommended to wear rubber gloves. After the procedure, wash your hands thoroughly with soap. Procedures should be carried out in a well-ventilated area. If you are taking other medications at the same time or have concomitant diseases of the scalp, you must consult a doctor before starting treatment. If itching continues for more than 4 weeks after scabies treatment, a doctor's consultation is required. The occurrence of hypersensitivity reactions requires discontinuation of treatment.

Special instructions for use

To destroy body lice, the contents of the bottle (24 ml) are diluted in 96 ml of water, and underwear and bed linen are soaked in the resulting emulsion for 40 minutes.

Storage conditions

In a dry place, protected from light, at a temperature of −10 - 20 °C.

Indications for use

Medifox is used not only to get rid of scabies.

If you study the reviews of many patients, the drug is effective in other cases:

  • Scabies in patients of different ages. In this case, the drug can be used in case of acute or chronic course of the disease, in the absence or presence of complications.

Medifox for scabies. Instructions for use, price, reviews

  • Demodicosis, in which the patient is affected by a large or small area of the skin. This disease is accompanied by severe itching, which is provoked by the penetration of microscopic mites into the upper layers of the skin.
  • Pediculosis of various forms and severity with damage to the scalp.
  • Pubic lice in patients of different sexes. In this case, it is allowed to use the medicine even with an advanced pathological condition.

The drug is often used to treat several pathologies at once, provoked by microorganisms sensitive to it. For example, when pediculosis is combined with demodicosis, treatment is carried out in 2 stages, which makes it possible to influence microbes and reduce the risk of complications.

Contraindications

Despite the effectiveness of the medication, its use is not recommended if you have an allergy to components or a history of a tendency to such manifestations. The period of pregnancy and lactation is not considered an absolute contraindication, but use at this time should be agreed with a specialist.

It is also worth refusing to use if there are purulent wounds, infected lesions or trophic ulcers in the area of intended application. The drug can provoke serious complications.

The gel and solution are not prescribed in the acute stage of psoriasis, dermatitis or eczema. In this case, the skin becomes very sensitive, and the use of medication can provoke complications.

Contraindications include the recovery period after myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke, and mental disorders in the acute stage.

The medicine should not be prescribed to patients who suffer from severe liver or kidney failure. Despite the low systemic absorption of the drug, its use in this case can provoke complications.

The medication is prescribed with caution to elderly patients. In each case, the list of contraindications may increase depending on the individual patient’s body.

At what age can the drug be used?

Medifox for scabies (patient reviews are mostly positive) and other diseases can only be used as prescribed by a doctor. The gel is approved for the treatment of children from 6 months. A concentrated solution of 20% is prescribed only to patients over 5 years of age.

If a less concentrated emulsion is prepared from the solution, it can be used for children over 1 year of age. In each case, a consultation with a doctor is required, who will accurately determine the dosage form and also explain the rules for preparing the emulsion for small children.

Terms and conditions of storage

Medifox should be stored in a dry, dark place at a temperature no higher than twenty-five degrees. The shelf life of the drug when unopened is five years. The prepared Medifox solution retains its properties for eight hours, so treatment is carried out immediately after preparing the emulsion.

Instructions for use of gel, solution, dosage

The use of each dosage form should be discussed with your doctor in advance. Different treatment regimens are used for different diseases.

From demodicosis

If the skin is damaged by mites, use only a solution with a concentration of 5% of the active ingredient. The solution in its pure form is applied to the affected area for 3-6 hours, depending on the severity of the itching.

Medifox for scabies. Instructions for use, price, reviews

The product is applied using a special cotton swab. Treatment can be repeated 2-3 times at intervals of 4-7 days. Usually this time is enough to obtain a therapeutic result.

Only in some cases with demodicosis is the use of gel allowed. It is distributed in a thin layer on the affected areas and rubbed in. The product should be washed off after 5-6 hours. The manipulation can be repeated after 4 days. In each case, the treatment regimen and dosage may differ depending on the patient and the degree of neglect of the condition.

For scabies

To treat scabies, only a solution is used. Usually you need to take a product with a concentration of the active component of 20%, then add 8 ml of solution to 100 ml of water. Treat the affected areas of the skin with the resulting product using a cotton swab. The manipulation should be carried out before bedtime, and in the morning take a warm shower using neutral soap.

Repeated use for scabies is allowed 4 days after the initial treatment. Usually 2 times is enough for complete recovery. Less concentrated solutions are not used. In addition, the dilution of the drug for the treatment of adults and children is no different; it is only important to take into account the age restrictions specified in the instructions.

For lice

The gel is used only for the treatment of pediculosis pubis, as well as for lice infestation of the scalp. When symptoms appear, a small amount of the product is rubbed into the roots of the hair, and then distributed over the entire length. The exposure time is 40 minutes. After this, the hair should be washed twice using a mild shampoo or neutral soap.

Repeating the treatment is allowed no earlier than 2 weeks after the initial use. Usually once is enough, but in some cases repeated use is required. When using the gel in the area of the external genitalia, it is also rubbed into the skin, and then distributed through the hair using a special comb or a regular plastic comb.

It is important, after removing the product from the pubic area or head, to carefully comb out the dead insects and their larvae with a comb.

Medifox for scabies. Instructions for use, price, reviews

It is worth noting that the concentrated solution can also be used to treat head lice. To do this, take the solution in ampoules and add 1 ampoule to 200 ml of water. Apply the resulting product to the scalp or genital area and leave for 20 minutes. The next step is to wash the treated area with neutral soap or shampoo and comb out the dead parasites using a comb.

If necessary, re-treatment can be carried out after 14 days. In each case, the treatment is controlled by a doctor.

How to take Medifox

For the treatment of head and pubic lice

Prepare a 0.2% emulsion. External treatment is carried out only with freshly prepared mixture. To obtain it, add 8 ml of concentrate from the bottle (it has marks on it) to 200 ml of boiled water (warm, not hot).

If ampoules are used, then the contents are 1 pc. (2 ml) diluted in 50 ml of water. To treat long hair, the dosage is doubled (4 ml of the drug / 100 ml of water).

The prepared solution should be applied to moistened scalp or body with a cotton swab. Can be rubbed into skin. Application time – 20 minutes. Wash off using usual hygiene products (soap, shampoo) with warm running water.

It is more convenient to use gel for pediculosis. It is applied to moistened scalp or body, rubbing into the roots of the hair, for 40 minutes. Then wash off with warm water and shampoo/soap. Dead parasites and nits are combed out with a comb. Treatment is carried out no more than 2 times a month.

Dead parasites after treatment are combed out using a comb

Dead parasites after treatment are combed out using a comb.

For scabies

Treatment is carried out for 4 days, without washing off the composition from the body until the end of the course. Emulsion 0.4% (add 1/3 of a bottle according to the markings or the contents of 4 ampoules to 100 ml of warm water) should be rubbed into the skin of the arms, legs and torso once a day. The face, neck and hair on the head should not be treated with the emulsion. After 4 days, the patient must take a shower, change bedding and underwear.

Side effects

Medifox for scabies (reviews of the product may be negative, which is associated with individual intolerance to the components of the composition) and other diseases is used quite often because it is highly effective. But the medication can cause complications, even if used correctly.

Organs and systemsMost common reactions
SkinMost often, complications arise specifically from the skin, which is associated with local use. Patients report increased itching and burning, and the appearance of rashes in the area of application and on healthy areas of the skin. As the condition progresses, the itching intensifies, leading to damage to the outer layer of skin when scratching. In rare cases, symptoms disappear on their own; special treatment is required with the prescription of systemic and local medications.
Nervous systemDisorders of the nervous system in most cases occur in patients against the background of local reactions. The patient becomes irritable, constant discomfort disrupts night sleep, and provokes a depressive state. Many patients become apathetic, others show aggression. After eliminating local manifestations, manifestations from the nervous system also disappear. No special treatment is required.
Digestive tractDisorders of the digestive tract also occur against the background of skin damage. Patients report loss of appetite, development of diarrhea or constipation. Such complications are considered rare and quickly disappear after the provoking factor is eliminated.

The severity of negative reactions in each case may differ. Some patients do not require special therapy, and symptoms disappear after a few hours. Others undergo long-term therapeutic courses.

Overdose

There have been no recorded cases of drug overdose, but doctors suggest that with the development of such a condition, all negative reactions worsen.

Usually the patient’s general condition does not worsen, but skin symptoms do not disappear for a long period of time. If negative reactions or signs of overdose occur, it is important to immediately stop using the product and consult a doctor.

In severe cases, care is provided to the patient in a hospital setting. Treatment usually takes no more than 3-5 days.
