Instructions for use of the drug Taboo for the Colorado potato beetle

Description and features of the drug "Taboo"

The active substance of this product is imidacloprid, thanks to which the insecticide leaves no chance for parasites. In the Tabu retail chain, the Colorado potato beetle is found in packaging of different capacities: from 10 ml ampoules to 5 liter canisters.

Imidacloprid kills even those pests whose bodies are resistant to organophosphorus compounds and pyrethroids.

During processing, potato tubers are irrigated with Tabu solution, resulting in the formation of a durable film of a reddish tint. After drying, it does not crumble. Color indication eliminates the possibility of partial processing of planting material. After irrigation with an insecticide, the tubers become pink-red, and those potatoes that were not exposed to the solution remain their natural color.

Using the “Tabu” remedy against the Colorado potato beetle allows you to significantly save time and money on measures to protect the future harvest. With this drug, the need for subsequent spraying of the beds automatically disappears.

Composition and principle of action

In addition to the main component, the emulsion contains the following substances:

  • dye;
  • antifreeze;
  • thickeners;
  • dispersants;
  • adhesive.

The effect of the poison “Taboo” against the Colorado potato beetle is long-lasting. The substance works for the next month and a half after planting the treated tubers. The insecticidal solution is evenly distributed over the surface of the potatoes. As soon as the substances enter the pest’s body, its nervous and digestive systems will be paralyzed, and it will die within 24 hours.

By the way, “Tabu” can be used to process not only potatoes, but also seeds of other agricultural crops (sunflower, wheat, barley, corn, beets, and barley.

Interestingly, scientists are studying the pesticide properties of the pesticide. At the same time, many summer residents, without waiting for official conclusions, are actively using it in this role today.

The principle of operation of "Taboo"

Using the Tabu preparation for treating potatoes according to the instructions, a single treatment is sufficient to achieve reliable protection of potato bushes at the most important stage - germination. “Tabu” begins to counteract pests that spoil potatoes within a day after the treatment was carried out

Note! The activity of the product gradually increases, and “Taboo” is most effective for 1.5-2 months. When planting potatoes, the taboo is applied to the tubers themselves, so the active substance is absorbed into them, due to which the root crops acquire a characteristic pinkish color

The insecticide also passes through the sap flow channels of the stems into the shoots and tops produced by the treated potatoes, so sprouted potatoes are also not to the taste of the Colorado potato beetle and wireworm. The mechanism of action of the disinfectant is that when pests enter the body, the active substance of the drug suppresses their nervous activity, as a result of which the insect dies from paralysis within a day

How to use it correctly

Before using poison against wireworms or Colorado potato beetles, it is important to select high-quality root crops for planting, spread them on polyethylene or immediately place them in prepared holes. The instructions for use of “Taboo” describe step by step how to prepare the working solution.

Processing takes place in several stages:

  • cover the outside of the tubers with the preparation;
  • wait for the emulsion to dry completely;
  • turn the root crops over and spray again.

Attention! It is not advisable to use the solution some time after preparation, since its effect weakens under the influence of ultraviolet rays and air.

Rules and subtleties of preparing a spray solution

The ampoule or canister with the concentrated substance is shaken. Depending on the method of processing tubers, choose the “Tabu” method of use and concentrate consumption.

To spray planting material, 8 ml of pesticide is mixed with a liter of water. The concentrate is dissolved in a glass of water, and then the emulsion is brought to the required volume. This amount of ready-made insecticide is quite enough to spray 100 kg of potatoes.

To treat holes with potatoes during planting, prepare a solution in a different dosage, based on a ratio of 4 ml per 10 liters. This volume of poison can be used to treat one hundred square meters of land. “Tabu” is not used for processing potato tops.

An unopened ampoule of concentrate against Colorado beetles and wireworms should be stored in a domestic area at a temperature from –10°C to +40°C.

Instructions for use

When planning to use the drug "Taboo", be sure to read the instructions! It is important to follow all recommendations specified in the instructions. This will guarantee the safety of your health and reliable protection of the crop from pests.

Tubers should be sprayed strictly on the day of planting, and not on the eve of this event or when the first leaves appear. This is the only way that the toxic chemical “Taboo” against parasites will demonstrate maximum effectiveness.

It is advisable to cultivate the soil or planting material in clear, sunny weather without wind. For comfortable use, it is recommended to use a spray bottle. If necessary, sprayed root crops can be transported, pre-packed in protective bags.

Advice! A treatment method that involves spraying the tubers with Tabu solution directly in the hole is considered less time-consuming. After etching, the furrow is immediately buried. For greater reliability, you can simultaneously process root crops and spray the soil.

Effect on the body and precautions

“Taboo” causes irreparable harm to the insect’s body. The drug against the Colorado potato beetle is no less dangerous for humans. To prevent serious poisoning, you must:

  • prepare the emulsion in a glass or plastic non-food container;
  • keep ampoules and vials away from children;
  • You must not eat, drink or smoke while processing planting material with the Taboo solution;
  • avoid contact of the drug with the skin and mucous membranes;
  • be sure to use personal protective equipment (masks, gloves, respirators);
  • Do not spray poison indoors.

After the procedure, put your work clothes in the wash, wash your hands thoroughly, wash with soap, and rinse your mouth. Ignoring recommendations can lead to chemical intoxication of the body, the symptoms of which are:

  • nausea and vomiting;
  • headache and dizziness;
  • weakness;
  • violation of movement coordination.

If you suspect poisoning with Tabu vapors, you should immediately consult a doctor or call an ambulance.

Help with poisoning

In case of contact with skin and mucous membranes, copious rinsing with running water is recommended. If the substance has entered the gastrointestinal tract and nausea, dizziness, and loss of coordination of movement are observed, it is necessary to contact a health care facility.

Taboo is the best drug that helps ease a summer resident’s fight against the Colorado potato beetle. The insecticide is not inferior in quality to the Prestige analogue; the products can be alternated every year to avoid pests becoming addicted.

Advantages and disadvantages

Based on user reviews, we can highlight both the pros and cons of using the drug “Taboo” for the Colorado potato beetle. Among the positive points:

  • simplicity and ease of use;
  • clear instructions;
  • Only one spray is enough;
  • valid for at least 45 days;
  • The shelf life of unopened ampoules is 3 years.

The disadvantages of this disinfectant include:

  • inconvenient dosage of the product (you have to use a syringe to prepare the suspension);
  • high cost (price per bottle is more than 6,500 rubles);
  • ineffective against fungus.

Action of components

Many owners use all available means of pest control, both chemical and folk. This helps, to some extent, preserve the harvest of this crop. Some of them use a mechanical method, when the Colorado potato beetle is collected by hand. This is an environmentally friendly method of control, but its implementation is noticeable only in small areas. In addition, this method of struggle takes a lot of energy and precious time.

Recently, on the market of chemical means to combat the Colorado potato beetle and other equally dangerous pests, drugs of a completely different direction have been developed. The domestically produced drug Tabu VSK is distinguished by the fact that it is cheaper than some foreign analogues.

The main active component of the product is the substance imidacloprid, which belongs to the neonicotinoid components that can provide short-term protection to sprayed plants until they begin to actively grow young shoots. The concentration of the active substance is about 500 g per liter of product.

The composition of the drug "Taboo" also includes other components, such as dyes, thickeners and surfactants, which provide good enveloping characteristics of the product, provide plants with the necessary nutrients, ensuring their active growth, and also make human work easier.

After spraying planting potatoes, imidacloprid penetrates into all tissues and also forms a protective film on the surface of the planting material. When the green part begins to grow, the toxic substance spreads into young shoots, which become toxic to the Colorado potato beetle and its larvae. When insects begin to feed on young potato leaves, a toxic substance enters its body and begins to have a detrimental effect on the nervous system. This leads to general paralysis of insects and subsequent death within 24 hours.

In addition to the Colorado potato beetle, Taboo protects potato tubers from wireworms throughout the growing season.

The drug is effective for 45 days. During this period, the plant goes through all the important stages of its development. When the effect of the product ends, the Colorado potato beetle is no longer able to cause significant damage to potato plantings.

It is important to know! The effect of the drug "Taboo" does not depend on weather conditions, since the active substance is located inside the cells of the plant. Therefore, it cannot be washed away by rain, compared to other plant protection products. https://www.youtube.com/embed/V-peP1IkAHw

Combination with other drugs, analogues

In agricultural settings, farmers often mix Tabu with other pest control products because they do not want to doubt the result. This drug interacts well with pesticides such as:

  • “Vitaros” – stimulates the growth of vegetables, destroys pests;
  • “Bunker” – used against infectious soil diseases;
  • "Vial Trust" is a domestically produced disinfectant and pesticide.

Instead of con, you can use their analogues:

  • “Tuber Shield” – provides protection against harmful insects and infections;
  • “Commander” - used to combat not only the Colorado potato beetle, but also aphids and psyllids;
  • “Provotox” is available in granules and is effective for six to seven weeks.

Before the appearance on the market of the drug “Taboo” for wireworms and the Colorado potato beetle, gardeners considered “Prestige” to be the most popular remedy. Both are considered worthy products in their category, but if you compare the two disinfectants, you will notice some differences. If you are wondering what to buy, “Prestige” or “Taboo” for Colorado beetles, keep in mind that the second remedy lasts longer and costs less. But at the same time, “Prestige” stimulates the growth of potatoes and is a fungicide, that is, it fights fungal diseases.

Which product is better Prestige or Taboo

Tabu is a relatively new insecticidal drug, so many vegetable growers do not dare to use it to combat wireworms and Colorado potato beetles in potato beds, preferring to use “Prestige” for these purposes.

When comparing these insecticides, the following should be noted:

  • the period of protection for potatoes with Prestige is 37 days, and for another substance – 1.5 months;
  • Tabu is also used for soil treatment, unlike in “Prestige”;
  • Prestige can be used to control pests and diseases, unlike Taboo;
  • Potatoes treated with Prestige grow better and faster.

Precautionary measures

The apiary protection zone for Taboo drugs is not established, as well as the danger class for bees, because Subject to compliance with the regulations for use, contact with/on objects visited by bees is excluded. However, all DV Taboo substances are class 1 dangerous for bees. Their concentration in the drug is high; fipronil is even more stable in open air and light than neonicotinoids (half-life at +25 degrees is more than 30 days). Therefore, when working with Tabu, you need to prevent the drug from getting on surrounding objects and honey plants. Other security zones are established as follows:

  • Reservoirs, water supply sources - according to their cadastral water protection zone.
  • Production areas for professional work with the drug are no closer than 500 m to any residential buildings, cultural land areas and natural productive lands.
  • Children's, medical and recreational institutions, public recreation areas - 150 m.
  • Residential buildings, outbuildings – 15 m.

The toxicological indicators of the DV Tabu are strict, and for fipronil they are very stringent: the ADI for humans is 0.0002 mg/kg body weight; OBUV in atmospheric air 0.0001 mg/cu. m. Therefore, professionally working with the Tabu disinfectant requires wearing full PPE that provides the maximum degree of protection (on the left in the figure): overalls for working with pesticides, a filtering respirator with a full-face mask and a gas-absorbing cartridge, rubber protective gloves and boots. The sleeves of the overalls are pulled over the cuffs of the gloves; trousers - untucked.

Personal protective equipment for professional work with the Tabu pesticide and for applying it to potatoes in private household plots

To apply “simple” Tabu PPE to potatoes in private household plots, you can use lightweight ones (on the right in the figure): a petal respirator with a gas-absorbing insert, safety glasses and latex gloves. When processing tubers, you need to wear a rubber or plastic apron, and wear rubber boots when spraying furrows (see below). In such equipment, the permissible working time with the drug is 4 hours. Immediately after work you need to wash in the shower with soap. Residues of the drug on PPE are neutralized with a 2-3 tbsp solution of soda. l. per 0.5 liters of water, and work clothes are washed with 72% laundry soap.

Treatment of potato tubers with Tabu in private household plots should be carried out using a hand sprayer. During operation, hold it so that the spray zone of the jet captures open air as little as possible. In practice (see bottom right in the figure) the “skirt” of the continuous film should only slightly fall short of the tubers. For further information on the treatment of planting potatoes with Tabu in private household plots, see the video guide:

Video: processing potatoes with Tabu and Prestige preparations

The Tabu insecticide is stored under the usual conditions for pesticides: in a separate non-residential premises, inaccessible to children and animals; You cannot store food products, medicines, medical supplies and household items there. Neutralization of spills in large quantities using special means; the contents of an accidentally broken ampoule in private household conditions - with a strong soda solution and then rinsing with water (the latter is not required for spills on the ground).

Precautionary measures

Insecticides are poison, so when diluting compounds, as well as spraying, you must strictly follow the rules:

  • use only special containers for diluting concentrates (the use of food containers is prohibited);
  • work with gloves, a mask and a respirator;
  • prepare the solution and spray the tubers and rows only in special clothing made of dense material.

At the first symptoms of poisoning (nausea, loss of coordination of movements, dizziness), immediately contact a doctor.

During storage, the packaging with the drug is kept out of the reach of children and pets. There should be no food, medicine, or drugs nearby. In terms of packaging time (canisters, ampoules, bottles in a sealed state) they are stored for up to three years.

When spraying rows and holes, prevent the diluted concentrate from getting on honey plants. They also maintain distances to the main security facilities:

  • to residential buildings – 15-20 meters;
  • to reservoirs - according to the cadastre protection zone;
  • to recreation areas - 150-200 meters.

Particular care must be taken to carry out treatments using Tabu Neo and Tabu Super, which contain additional active substances.
